About the Item

'Young Navajo at Baseball' is a black and white photographic print on Hahnemuhle in a limited edition of 10 by Michael Ormerod. Featured in the 2024 posthumous solo exhibition, 'Michael Ormerod: Vanishing Point'. Michael Ormerod was a British photographer with a distinct and powerful voice, whose career was cut short on 7 August 1991 when he was killed in a road accident on his last field trip to the USA. Known for his striking and evocative images capturing American landscapes and urban scenes, his work depicted the raw, gritty reality of life in post-industrial boom America, but Ormerod was nonetheless able to capture the beauty. The photographs are understated, but show an unseen America, where the industrial heartland is decaying, highways stand empty and towns are deserted. The subjects of Ormerod’s work are the disenfranchised, their expressions unreadable. Since his death, Ormerod has received two posthumous solo exhibitions: the first, at the eponymous Zelda Cheatle Gallery in London, held to coincide with the release of his book 'States of America'; the second, held by Sheffield Graves Art Gallery in 2003. In 2010, Crane Kalman Brighton Gallery mounted a solo exhibition of Ormerod's work. Since then, never-before-seen images have been discovered in Ormerod's archive, and together with Millenium Library and Ormerod's daughter, Ali, Crane Kalman Brighton was honoured to be able to present this entirely unseen selection of work by Michael Ormerod as the recent solo show 'Vanishing Point', which was held in October 2024. This print is also available in a larger size. Please bear in mind that lead times are expected between 10-15 days.

By Earlie Hudnall Jr.
Located in Denton, TX
Hip Hop by Earlie Hudnall, Jr. is a portrait of a young shirtless boy posed against a wall, wearing baggy pants and a silver chain. Gelatin Silver Print 14 x 11 in. Signed, titled and dated in pencil on verso Growing up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Earlie Hudnall, Jr. learned the importance of community and culture and photography. His father was an amateur photographer, and his grandmother kept the family albums filled with valuable snapshots. After returning from his tour-of-duty in Vietnam, Earlie Hudnall moved to Houston to study at Texas Southern University. There, he continued his interest in photography. While studying art, he met one of his most significant mentors, John Biggers, the painter and muralist that depicted African American life in the South. He had impressed Earlie to make art that was drawn from his own experiences. His images capture communities much like the one in his home- town of Hattiesburg. Earlie’s strongest work was made in Houston. Earlie Hudnall’s images have been widely published. And his photographs are included in many major museum collections in the United States and Europe, including the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Art Institute Chicago and the National Gallery in Washington, DC. Artists have been influenced by Hudnall’s work, including James Laxton, the Cinematographer of the 2017 Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Moonlight. Also, Tyler Mitchell...
