"David Bowie and Mick Ronson, in the Train 1973" 30 x 40 in 16/25 by Mick Rock
David Bowie and Mick Ronson, in the Train to Aberdeen, Scotland, 1973
Edition: 16/25
Signed and numbered by Mick Rock
Medium: Silver gelatin limited edition photographic print on paper
“Taken on the train up to Aberdeen, Scotland for the first gig of David’s final Ziggy tour, 15 May 1973. Another image that got lost in the archive until it finally surfaced in "Moonage Daydream." I have a slew of photos on the train and in the stations of David in that amazing jacket. But the favorite one for fans is this one.
Of all my limited edition fine art prints, this may be the one that has sold the most. Maybe it’s got something to do with the ridiculously ‘glam’ look of the magic duo and the obviously mundane nature of their British Rail lunch – lamb chops, boiled potatoes, peas with the bread rolls and pats of butter. But also perhaps something to do with the warm conspiratorial way they are looking at each other. They had the rock scene by the horns and they were savouring it!”

MICK ROCK
Renowned rock photographer Mick Rock has long been called ‘the Man who Shot the Seventies’. The Times of London has described him as ‘the music world’s top snapper’. His earliest iconic photos were taken of Syd Barrett in 1969 while Mick was a student at Cambridge University, but he came to the fore in 1972 when he became Bowie’s official photographer. For two years he documented the meteoric rise to stardom of Bowie’s legendary alter ego Ziggy Stardust, shooting album covers, posters, artwork and videos for Life on Mars and Space Oddity and Jean Genie, plus, of course, a huge archive of photographs.
Rock was instrumental in creating many classic rock n roll images throughout the 1970s, responsible for album covers such as Lou Reed’s ‘Transformer’, Iggy Pop’s ‘Raw Power’, Queen’s ‘Queen II’ and ‘Sheer Heart Attack’. Mick spent a lot of time in New York in the late 70s where he became very involved with the local ‘punk’ scene and extensively shot all the rising stars including The Ramones, Talking Heads and Blondie. His pictures, including The Ramones’ ‘End of the Century’, captured the revolutionary spirit of this groundbreaking period and made him the one of the most sought-after photographers in the world. He moved permanently to New York in 1982. Rock’s enthusiasm for his work has remained fresh and he continues to capture the musical spirit of succeeding eras through his photography with musicians throughout the 80’s and 90’s up to the present day.

"It was a press conference at the Dorchester Hotel in London. RCA Records had flown a bunch of American journalists to London in July 1972 to promote David’s upcoming US tour and the release of his Ziggy Stardust album. Iggy and Lou were both working on their new albums, Raw Power and Transformer and were hanging out at the conference.
Even though Iggy and Lou were still basically “underground” artists, and David’s ascent was still in its early days, it was a photo that I really wanted to take. Only later did it become one of the classic rock images. So I hustled them together. The only thing I remember was Lou saying: “This will be a pretty picture!”
When Mick Rock first met David Bowie, he had previously met and photographed both Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, so there was an immediate bond formed...
