About the Item
'Carousel, Coney Island New York' is a black and white archival inkjet print by Morgan Silk.
It is available in this size of 14.5" x 14.5" in a limited edition of 20,
Located on the world-famous Coney Island, the iconic B&B Carousell remains the centerpiece of the Steeplechase Plaza, and continues to draw the crowds to Coney Island's Luna Park today.
The carousel was built on Coney Island in 1906, and has captivated millions of tourists and Americans alike over its existence. As a piece of artwork, the Carousell represents the charm and entertainment of the turn of the 20th century. Featuring hand-carved wooden horses and majestic chariots, the Carousel represents the attraction and charm of an era gone by.
The cylindrical pavilion that encircles the Carousel was a recent addition to the structure. Featuring decorative horses on its facing, the pavilion protects the interior from the elements, and adds a further layer of excitement like entering a circus fair.
In this image, Silk continues a practice of abstraction that he has favoured in his depictions of iconic or famous landmarks. To capture an element of the whole instead of the whole itself enhances the anticipation of seeing the thing - it casts a shadow of drama and mystery which is coupled with consciousness and knowing.
The bright neon lights of Luna Park illuminate the night sky and the rollercoasters in the background. Far away in the distance, the apartment blocks of Coney Island residences punctuate the dusky sky with window-shaped dots of light.
Taken during a road trip across the United States in 2014, Silk’s project ‘Nightwalks’ captures the cities and people in reflective and introspective moods so intrinsically linked to the small, quiet hours of the morning.
Starting in New York and ending in New Orleans via Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama, ‘Nightwalks’ is the hush that falls over a city after the sun sets; it’s the moment between a bar-goer reaching for and taking a sip of their bourbon; it’s the moment when the inhabitants of the city go inside, and the city itself wakes up.
Morgan Silk states about Nightwalks:
“Similarly to much of my other work, the images are purely observational and were unplanned without any particular concept or idea of any particular subject, shot on the hoof with a pocket camera and no other equipment. No setting up, no waiting for the light. More akin to street photography in approach.
I warm to the concept of no concept when out with a camera, it’s where my love for photography began and I find the best images I make come out of nowhere, unexpectedly and without preconceived ideas. You have to allow yourself to be receptive and let things flow freely, just being there in a totally new place, equipped and present at the right moment.
The images instinctively come to you if you are open to seeing them. Thinking can get in the way sometimes so simply going out with a camera in this way is more about photographing by feel and less about thinking.”

Morgan Silk
Morgan Silk is a contemporary British photographer, born in the English market town of Burton-on-Trent. Silk's style of photography is minimalist and uncluttered, preferring sun-bleached, unsaturated aesthetic which emphasises the quality of visual detail available to the viewer. In his portraits of people, Silk employs a similar approach, highlighting the details of humanity of these subjects. Silk has been involved in creating photographic images since the mid-1980s after graduating from Blackpool and the Fylde College. He began his career as a creative re-toucher working alongside photographers for advertising clients, and then began to experiment with his own photography, predominantly colour landscapes, his skills as a re-toucher continuing to be employed to give an unusual and personal touch to the finished work. Now a highly successful photographer in his own right his major commercial clients include Land Rover, BMW, Umbro and Nike. Commissions in 2009 included a project run by FHM magazine as part of a new drive to help recruit RAF Regiment Officers, and a campaign for Network Rail. His highly acclaimed project Zoo won him an Association of Photographers Gold Award, and Morgan also received an Honourable Mention at the International Photo Awards (2009). His portrait of Jake Tassell from the series ‘After The Riots’ was selected as one of the six chosen limited edition covers of 2009’s Creative Review Photography Annual.

This stunning 20"x 24" toned silver gelatin contact print is one of two final, late 2012 images that complete the Michael Massaia portfolio taken along the New Jersey Shore and presciently called "Afterlife". Beginning in 2008, the artist meticulously documented the amusement park rides along the gritty boardwalks of Seaside Heights seen by millions, but ultimately not really seen. Employing large format view cameras and film, Michael photographed in the early morning hours to depict these normally bustling areas completely devoid of humanity.
As a native post Hurricane Sandy, he was able to revisit the amusement piers laid to waste by the storm to witness the devastation of all that he had previously photographed. The Funtown Pier was taken in November 2012 and is the last of two post storm photographs...
