About the Item

'Eldorado Auto Skooter, Coney Island New York' is a black and white archival inkjet print by Morgan Silk. It is available in this size of 18" x 18" in a limited edition of 10. The Eldorado Auto Skooter on Coney Island might be an unfamiliar name to most. It's the iconic bumper car ride in Coney Island, and it has been there since 1973, making it one of oldest continuous attractions on the famed tourist island. For generations, both tourists and New Yorkers alike have made the pilgramage to Coney Island's Eldorado Auto Skooter, seeking the nostalgia and vintage aesthetic that can only be found in this unique site of dance, music, and endless amusement. In this photograph, Silk abstracts the whole in favour of its parts. Rather than capturing the entirety of the iconic frontage of the Eldorado Auto Skooter, Silk hones in on one of Eldorado's signature pieces of signage, the evocative "Bump Your Ass Off" with its childlike drawing of an ass (donkey). The lightbulbs flicker in a pattern and attribute a gentle glow to the signage which makes it the star of this show. Silk states about the project: “Similarly to much of my other work, the images are purely observational and were unplanned without any particular concept or idea of any particular subject, shot on the hoof with a pocket camera and no other equipment. No setting up, no waiting for the light. More akin to street photography in approach. I warm to the concept of no concept when out with a camera, it’s where my love for photography began and I find the best images I make come out of nowhere, unexpectedly and without preconceived ideas. You have to allow yourself to be receptive and let things flow freely, just being there in a totally new place, equipped and present at the right moment. The images instinctively come to you if you are open to seeing them. Thinking can get in the way sometimes so simply going out with a camera in this way is more about photographing by feel and less about thinking.” Taken during a road trip across the United States in 2014, Silk’s project ‘Nightwalks’ captures the cities and people in reflective and introspective moods so intrinsically linked to the small, quiet hours of the morning. Starting in New York and ending in New Orleans via Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama, ‘Nightwalks’ is the hush that falls over a city after the sun sets; it’s the moment between a bar-goer reaching for and taking a sip of their bourbon; it’s the moment when the inhabitants of the city go inside, and the city itself wakes up. All prints sold unframed. Other print sizes available, contact the gallery for more details. Lead times between 5-10 days.
