About the Item
'Nathan's Coney Island, NY' is a black and white archival inkjet print by Morgan Silk.
It is available in this size of 18" x 18" in a limited edition of 10.
The self-proclaimed "world famous" Nathan's delicatessen on Coney Island features in Morgan Silk's portrait of the tourist-haven after the sun has dipped below the horizon.
Taking a position up on the opposite side of the street, Silk has the perfect vantage point to observe the eager tourists that flock in great numbers to experience the pinacle of take home food on Coney Island.
Taken during a road trip across the United States in 2014, Silk’s project ‘Nightwalks’ captures the cities and people in reflective and introspective moods so intrinsically linked to the small, quiet hours of the morning.
Starting in New York and ending in New Orleans via Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama, ‘Nightwalks’ is the hush that falls over a city after the sun sets; it’s the moment between a bar-goer reaching for and taking a sip of their bourbon; it’s the moment when the inhabitants of the city go inside, and the city itself wakes up.
Silk states about the project:
“Similarly to much of my other work, the images are purely observational and were unplanned without any particular concept or idea of any particular subject, shot on the hoof with a pocket camera and no other equipment. No setting up, no waiting for the light. More akin to street photography in approach.
I warm to the concept of no concept when out with a camera, it’s where my love for photography began and I find the best images I make come out of nowhere, unexpectedly and without preconceived ideas. You have to allow yourself to be receptive and let things flow freely, just being there in a totally new place, equipped and present at the right moment.
The images instinctively come to you if you are open to seeing them. Thinking can get in the way sometimes so simply going out with a camera in this way is more about photographing by feel and less about thinking.”

Morgan Silk
Morgan Silk is a contemporary British photographer, born in the English market town of Burton-on-Trent. Silk's style of photography is minimalist and uncluttered, preferring sun-bleached, unsaturated aesthetic which emphasises the quality of visual detail available to the viewer. In his portraits of people, Silk employs a similar approach, highlighting the details of humanity of these subjects. Silk has been involved in creating photographic images since the mid-1980s after graduating from Blackpool and the Fylde College. He began his career as a creative re-toucher working alongside photographers for advertising clients, and then began to experiment with his own photography, predominantly colour landscapes, his skills as a re-toucher continuing to be employed to give an unusual and personal touch to the finished work. Now a highly successful photographer in his own right his major commercial clients include Land Rover, BMW, Umbro and Nike. Commissions in 2009 included a project run by FHM magazine as part of a new drive to help recruit RAF Regiment Officers, and a campaign for Network Rail. His highly acclaimed project Zoo won him an Association of Photographers Gold Award, and Morgan also received an Honourable Mention at the International Photo Awards (2009). His portrait of Jake Tassell from the series ‘After The Riots’ was selected as one of the six chosen limited edition covers of 2009’s Creative Review Photography Annual.
