The Comédie-Française – A Cultural Landmark
The Comédie-Française, founded in 1680 by royal decree under King Louis XIV, is France’s national theatre and one of the oldest active theatres in the world. It unified the troupes of Molière, Racine, and Corneille, and remains a cornerstone of French dramatic arts.
Often referred to as “La Maison de Molière,” the theatre has premiered and preserved classic French works. Paul Almasy (born 1906, Budapest – died 2003, Jouars-Pontchartrain, France) was a cosmopolitan photojournalist, author and documentarian, known for his penetrating yet poetic depictions of life across the globe. Fluent in six languages, Almasy traveled extensively for press agencies, UNESCO, and international publications. His work captured everything from war-torn regions and rural life to the glamour of Parisian cafés and the arts.
Although Hungarian by birth, Almasy chose France as his adopted homeland. His photographs blend the objectivity of documentary work with the compositional eye of a humanist, and his archive contains some of the 20th century's most insightful visual testimonies—particularly of postwar Europe.
