The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, marked a pivotal moment in world history, symbolising the end of the Cold War and the collapse of communist regimes in Eastern Europe. Erected in 1961, the Wall had physically and ideologically divided the city, separating families and communities. Its sudden opening followed weeks of mounting protests in East Germany, and the jubilant scenes along Berlin’s central landmarks became an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy, but also the triumph of popular will over oppression. Over these days in mid-November, Depardon photographed crowds of East and West Berliners embracing, climbing on the Wall, and chipping away pieces of the barrier. Presented in collaboration with Magnum Photos.
