About the Item

A charming photograph of an elephant cadging an apple from an obliging, friendly London tram driver along Gray's Inn road in Central West London. The first street tram in a city was in fact in New York. The New York and Harlem line opened in 1832, and coined the term still used today: street railway. It was thanks to American promoters of the concept of the street railway, or tram, that Europe ultimately benefited. Birkenhead in England opened its tramway in 1860, followed shortly after by London in 1861. This London tram was running between the Kingsway suburb via Westminster to Battersea in Wandsworth. Battersea was home to the Battersea Power Station, built only 7 years prior to this photograph originally being captured in 1936. Photograph captured in 1936. 16" x 20" print Silver Gelatin print. Prints are made from the scanned original negative, and are offered as Silver Gelatin Prints. These are a high quality modern resin coated emulsion darkroom paper used for the production of darkroom prints. Exposed by hand and machine dried and fixed. Prints are produced to order and lead times up to 7 working days. Printed later from the Hulton Archive and Getty Images. Other print size may be available, enquire through the gallery. Taken from the world’s largest photographic archive, (Hulton Archive and Getty Images), the Getty Images Gallery collection features an extraordinary time capsule of the last century – social and political images that both made the news, as well as images from behind the headlines, which show the human race at work and play. This stunning collection of photographs encompasses both the public and private lives of the 20th Century and its personalities. Including both famous and relatively unknown images, this glimpse into the Getty Images archive provides an insight into renowned social documentary photography, street photography, and of course, celebrity imagery.

Untitled #30 (Policeman Big Ben), 2012 - Limited Edition Silver Gelatin print
By Giacomo Brunelli
Located in Brighton, GB
Untitled #30 (Policeman Big Ben) from the series Eternal London is a Limited Edition Silver Gelatin print by Giacomo Brunelli. This size of 9" x 12" from a Limited Edition of 10. As the edition sells through, the print increases in price to reflect rarity. Giacomo Brunelli was commissioned by The Photographer's Gallery, London, to capture the heart of the capital city where he lives. Made over the course of 2 years, Eternal London takes Brunelli's distinctive film noir aesthetic to create an evocative and atmospheric view of London, full of powerful light and shadow work. Framed by boldly abstract silhouettes of people and animals, London's famous landmarks are presented in a less-than-obvious way, reflected in the puddles that typify English weather or looming as a mysterious structure in the background. Captured during daily morning walks, Brunelli randomly chose a person to follow before focussing his camera on them. Working discreetly, like early 20th century photographers such as Jacob Riis...
