Note: The International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts (French: Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes) was a World Fair held in Paris, France, from April to October 1925. It was designed by the French government to highlight the new Modern style of architecture, interior decoration, furniture, glass, jewelry, and other decorative arts in Europe and throughout the world. Many ideas of the international avant-garde in architecture and applied arts were presented for the first time at the Exposition. The event was located between the esplanade of Les Invalides and the entrances of the Grand Palais and Petit Palais and on both banks of the Seine. During its seven-month run, the event was visited by sixteen million people and had 15,000 exhibitors from twenty different countries. The Style Moderne presented at the Exposition later became known as "Art Deco," after the name of the Exposition.
La Samaritaine is a large department store in Paris, France, located in the first arrondissement. The nearest métro station is Pont-Neuf, in front of the Quai du Louvre and the rue de la Monnaie. Created in 1872, the store was owned by Ernest Cognacq and Marie-Louise Jaÿ, who hired architect Frantz Jourdain to expand their original store in 1891. It started as a small apparel shop and grew into a series of department store buildings with 90 sections.
Architect Frantz Jourdain was hired to assist in the remodeling and expansion of the existing store building, known as Magasin 1. As the store's success grew, Cognacq expanded to Magasin 2, designed by Jourdain, which became the site for Samaritaine. The building expansion was done in stages, partly because the store had to remain open to generate revenue. The construction was completed quickly since most of the building was prefabricated off-site. The building was proposed in 1905, and after five years of construction, the building, filling an entire block, was completed in 1910. The original store, Magasin 1, was eventually updated with a steel and glass structure to match Magasin 2, located across the street.
By the time the department store was completed in 1910, new movements, such as Fauvism, Cubism, and Werkbund, had come about and devalued the style of the Samaritaine. In the 1920s, Cognacq requested an expansion of the department store. City officials allowed for the construction with the stipulation that Cognacq follow their specifications centered around using a more current architectural style. This was done with little opposition as both Cognacq and Jourdain were aware that the original look of the building was outdated. This reconstruction and expansion phase saw the glass domes and decorative ironwork removed. The new addition was a collaboration between architects Jourdain and Henry Sauvage, completed between 1926 and 1928, which featured cream-colored stone and was of the Art Deco style. Like the original building, exposed steel was used, but its focus was much more geometry-based. At the end of construction, the Samaritaine eventually consisted of four different Magasins of department stores reaching eleven stories.
La Samaritaine was bought in 2001 by LVMH, the luxury goods company that had just purchased Le Bon Marché. On June 15, 2005, the department store was closed for security upgrades or restructuring. LVMH selected the Japanese architectural firm SANAA to renovate the building. Implementation of the new design has been blocked several times by local authorities for failure to adhere to planning requirements and for lack of visual compatibility with the surrounding buildings. In June 2015, the Rivoli building permit was finalized, and construction began in September of the same year. This modern construction of the Samaritaine is designed to feature a hotel, restaurant, brewery, cafes, offices, and housing and was completed in 2019. Due to the pandemic, the department store was finally reopened in June 2021.
