About the Item

Framed and matted under glass, William Klein "Smoke and Veil" depicts model, Evelyn Tripp with a cigarette held between two elegantly polished fingers. Signed in pencil on verso "Smoke + Veil, Paris 1958 (Vogue) ... William Klein" Artist Bio: William Klein (1928–2022) was a pioneering American-born photographer, filmmaker, and graphic designer known for his innovative and unconventional style in fashion, street, and documentary photography, with an early career in abstract painting. After studying in Paris with Fernand Léger, Klein developed a raw, dynamic approach to fashion photography for Vogue and captured the energy of cities like New York, Rome, and Tokyo in his groundbreaking photo books, including his influential Life Is Good and Good for You in New York (1956). He later shifted to filmmaking, creating works like the satirical Who Are You, Polly Maggoo? (1966) and the documentary Muhammad Ali: The Greatest (1974), leaving a legacy of fearless experimentation that blurred genres and challenged conventions.

"The Kiss" 2023, dark figurative oil painting by Daniela Astone
By Daniela Astone
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
Part of Daniela Astone's series of figures in different ethereal and surrealistic spaces. "The Kiss" brings to mind Gustav Klimt's famous 1908 painting of the same name but instead of an abstracted gold background, Astone creates a mysterious creature enveloping and suspending the figure in mid-air. The dark monster looks ominous until you notice the nude figure leaning into her partner, her hands lightly caressing or leaning on the the amorphous creature. Her body is relaxed and her eyes closed. As a classical artist who paints the nude figure everyday, Astone is masterful at depicting women at ease in their natural bodies rather than women self-conscious of their nudity—posing but fearful of exploitation at the same time—a theme in art history that continues today. Some of the sweeping strokes of black are inspired by Japanese paintings techniques, and on the lighter areas there are rain drop falling from a blue-grey cloud in the background. 52.8 x 44.9 inches framed Artist Bio Daniela Astone was born in Pisa, Italy, in 1980 and raised in Porto Santo Stefano...

The Carriage
By Alejandro Alfonso
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
24 x 31 inches Framed We proudly welcome Alejandro Sainz Alfonso, (b.1965), to the fold. Alfonsos hugely colorful and at times, comedic take on his life in Cuba is expressed in this series of silkscreen prints. From “Fried Potatoes” to “Review of History” we see a world from the perspective of a population living under the sea inside of the 100 year old divers suits. When I asked him if this is what it is like to live in Cuba under the current political regime – he said “no – that this is what its like to be a human on planet earth”. We were intrigued to see Cuba, from an artistic perspective. Like Darwin’s Galapagos Islands, we were able to see a vibrant artistic community that has had very few outside influences since 1959. The visual and literary diet seems to have been limited to 1950s movie stars, Albrecht Durers prints...
