10 x 8 inch type-c print, printed later. Estate stamp on verso. Bruce Wrighton worked mainly in the mid-1980s, using an 8 x 10 inch camera to photograph near his home in Binghamton, New York. In his series St. George and the Dragon, he explored the power of both sacred and secular images and icons that he discovered in local taverns, churches, and homes. His collage works feature delicate arrangements of everyday and found objects, which appear painterly and abstract from a distance, but up-close they reveal his intricate, considered approach to the presentation. His series Street Portraits focused on individuals and couples who were very much a part of the city’s working class, many of whom lived outside the mainstream of society. His Dinosaurs and Dreamboats series celebrated the classic American cars of the 1950’s, juxtaposed within the older architecture of Binghamton. In everything Bruce Wrighton saw dignity and monumentality. He saw gracious permanence in Binghamton’s civic buildings and astounding holiness in its religious structures. While Wrighton’s subjects are diverse – including elaborately arranged still life, portraiture, landscape and architecture – a formal concern pervaded all of his work. Elements of design, color and musicality are central to both his choice of subject and the framing of each view. Bruce Wrighton was born in Ithaca, New York, in 1950. He graduated from the University of Rochester and studied at the Visual Studies Workshop, and lived and worked in Binghamton, New York, until his death in 1988 at the age of 38. His work can be found in major museum, corporate, and private collections in the U.S and in Europe, including Goldman Sachs, Dow Jones, the Hall Family Foundation, the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Martin Margulies collection in Miami. His work has been exhibited at galleries in New York, Paris, and Hamburg, and in 2010 at the Museum für Photographie Braunschweig. Most recently, in 2013, his work was shown at the Center for Photography at Lectoure, France.
