About the Item

Valkyrien is a photograph by Christian Houge from the Subcultural series which depicts a portrait of a woman wearing a metal hair ornament reminiscent of medieval times. Dimensions are 60 x 48 cm (23.6 × 18.9 in) 120 x 96 cm (47.2 × 37.8 in) and 160 x 128 cm (63.0 × 50.4 in). The price shown is for the print mounted on aluminium and unframed. For any special request concerning framing, please contact us. Each print is numbered and signed by the artist. In this series, the photographer portrays striking individuals whose presence hints at rich, untold stories. Through these portraits, he seeks to reveal authenticity, emotional depth, and a distinct sense of identity. His aim is to create images that move beyond surface representation, capturing fleeting moments of truth and presence. For this body of work, Christian Houge employs the wet collodion technique, a photographic process invented by Frederick Scott Archer in 1851. Renowned for its organic beauty and exceptional visual depth, the process is also notoriously demanding — involving complex chemical reactions and extended exposure times. The models must remain perfectly still, and a single session can last several hours. “Alongside my fine art photography, I’ve dedicated countless hours to learning and crafting collodion wet plates. Each flaw has deepened my understanding of this intricate, alchemical process. A wet plate portrait is more than an image – it’s a tangible encounter, a one-of-a-kind expression of authenticity and presence.” — Christian Houge Houge’s choice of this technique reflects his fascination with the unpredictability inherent in the process — a metaphor for life’s fragility, transience, and imperfection. In an age dominated by instant digital imagery, the collodion process reintroduces time, craftsmanship, and intentionality, infusing the classical portrait with renewed vitality and depth.
