In his Vanitas series (2019–2022), Christian Houge reinterprets the iconography of vanitas still lifes—a genre that flourished across Europe in the 17th century and was marked by symbols of the transience of human life and the futility of earthly pleasures. Traditionally, a skull—illustrating the Latin phrase memento mori (“remember you will die”)—was paired with objects that evoked time, mortality, and human desire: candles, books, musical instruments, jewels, fruit, and flowers. These compositions served as meditations on life and death, urging viewers to live with awareness and intention. In his contemporary photographic approach, Houge draws particular inspiration from early 17th-century Dutch masters such as Pieter Claesz and David Bailly. At the core of his images stands the skull—a timeless and universal symbol that transcends cultures and disciplines. Yet Houge disrupts the traditional vanitas vocabulary by introducing an unexpected element: fire. Both destructive and purifying, fire adds new interpretive depth to the work. It becomes a metaphor for the annihilation of a contemporary culture obsessed with ego and digital imagery, while simultaneously enacting a process of transformation—a rebirth of the skull and the identities it represents. “The cathartic performance of burning is very much in the moment, as the fire continually alters both the skull and the still life, consuming each element in stages. It is both a cremation and a liberation for the object itself—a closure, a final breath of life. […] Vanitas is a beautiful reminder that we will all transcend this life one day. The question of what comes next has remained one of humanity’s greatest mysteries, and even with our remarkable progress, it is still left unanswered.” — Christian Houge
