About the Item

OTTOBEUREN ABBEY LIBRARY Ottobeuren, Germany - 2024 140 x 220 cm (55.1" x 86.6") Edition size: 12 Light jet, exposure on high glossy paper and aluminum dibond Distance Frame, Tulipwood, Lacquered Matt Black, Museum Glass included Ottobeuren Abbey Library: The abbey was founded by the Benedictine order in the 8th century, one of a number of surviving important religious buildings in Bavaria which can date their history back to those times. The early history of the monastery appears to have been somewhat of a rollercoaster, with enthusiastic abbots who installed reforms and set up centres for writing and, later, printing and the grant of the 'Imperial Abbey' status (which essentially gave the abbot the rights of an independent state subject only to the Emperor, including the right to raise taxes from the surrounding villages). But the abbey also suffered from financial instability and the frequent central European wars. The 18th century, with a period of peace and prosperity, meant that the institution could start to bloom and the imposing Baroque complex dates from this period. Ottobeuren was taken into government hands during the Napoleonic era and only became a religious institution again in 1835 (as a priory) and in the early 20th century it regained its status as an abbey. Ottobeuren Abbey is these days also well-known for its series of classical music concerts held every Saturday in the summer months, which started after the Second World War and have attracted prominent conductors and musicians. Artist Bio: Born in Munich, Germany, Christian Voigt lives and works in Hamburg and The South of France. His current studio is situated in Hamburg. Christian Voigt works with large-format cameras, both digital and analogue. He experiments with new camera techniques and makes the best use of the digital medium. In the museum edition, his large-format pictures can measure as much as eight meters in width. But his strictly limited editions also come in sizes which customers and collectors can hang on walls of more modest sizes. Christian Voigt has developed a language capable of telling new stories. He continually works to refine a pictorial idiom, the stories he wants to tell, the feelings he convey. This is visible in his pictures; Landscape and architecture are his principal areas of interest, but he also does portraits and nudes. The travels associated with his projects and places call for concentration, for the ability to get to grips with people, with their history and their religion. "My pictures are created with the camera, not on the computer," he says, with a reference to the complicated technology and processing that goes into his creations. "But without the computer technology of today, the pictures couldn’t be crafted into their final form." Solo shows and Art Fairs have been staged in Basel, Hamburg, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, London, Saint Tropez, Amsterdam, and Madrid.

Philosophical Hall Strahov Monastery, Prague, Czech Republic, Prague, 2015 157 x 224 cm Edition size: 12 Light jet, exposure on high glossy paper and aluminum dibond Framed with tulipwood, distance framing, and a UV 99 museum glass. The Monastery of the Premonstratensian Order at Strahov in Prague has a history reaching back to the 12th century and is a listed National Cultural Monument of the Czech Republic. The monastery was founded during the reign of King Vladislav II on the impetus of the Bishop of Olomouc Jindřich Zdík. The monastery acquired its current Baroque appearance in the years between 1671 and 1674, when an extensive rebuilding was carried out according to design by the architect Giovanni Domenico Orsi. Additional alterations were carried out in 1742 by the architect-builder Anselmo Lurago. The beginnings of today’s library of the Strahov monastery can be placed in the era of Giovanni Domenico Orsi’s rebuilding work. Visitors to the Philosophical Hall are immediately drawn to the painting on its ceiling titled, “The Spiritual Progress of Mankind” by the artist Franz Anton Maulbertsch, who was assisted by his pupil Martin Michl. The artist worked on the painting from April till October 1794. The book collection of the Philosophical Hall library contains works on history, theology, poetry and liturgical texts.
