About the Item

Break Point Oslo, Norway - 2023 Archival Pigment Print on 315gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta Paper Edition Size: 20 Available sizes: Standard Image Size: 30" x 73" Framed Size: 45" x 88" Large Image Size: 42" x 102" Framed Size: 57" x 117" Artist Statement: Casper Ruud was the fourth highest ranking men’s tennis player in the world when this was shot. That is something Norwegians are rightly very proud of given that the nation is more recognised for producing elite alpine skiers. These are heady sporting days for the country. They also currently boast the most talked about footballer on the planet and a very competitive professional golfer in Viktor Hovland. Ahead of our show in Oslo in late September, we have spent some time in Norway photographing some of their stars and the opportunity to work with Casper was a treat. He is the most likeable and modest of sport stars, especially given his position in the world rankings, and is single handedly creating a tennis boom in the country. As we have seen with Croatia and football, success begets success and that makes his career and legacy very relevant in Norway. It happened in Sweden a generation ago and Casper is aware of the responsibility his success has bestowed upon him. I wanted to play on the relationship between the player and those that follow him with the intensity that only sport can deliver. The end of every rally can elicit almost identical emotions in both protagonist and fan - whether that emotion be opened mouthed elation or head in hands disappointment. The bigger the point, the bigger the emotion, and therefore the sense of behavioural harmony is amplified. My preconception was that this photograph should be cinematic and, in my pondering, I had an idea as to what would work in the background. It needed to be abstract to lead the eye to Casper, but it also needed to inform. There was a fine balance and it’s an iterative process. I think we got there in the end. No sport creates this sense of unity between player and spectator more than tennis. - David Yarrow

National Treasure (Mikaela Shiffrin) Oslo, Norway - 2023 Sizes: Large - Edition of 20 Unframed 56" x 84" Framed 71" x 99" Standard - Edition of 20 Unframed 37" x 55" Framed 52"x 70" Artist Statement: "Born in Vail, Colorado, Mikaela Shiffrin has the most World Cup wins (currently 88) of any alpine skier in history (men or women) and is considered one of the greatest alpine skiers of all time. She is a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, a five-time Overall World Cup champion and a four-time world champion in slalom. A role model for young athletes across the world, she was named as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine in 2023. I was delighted and honoured that she agreed to be part of our sporting legends series. Mikaela dates another skiing superstar - Norway’s downhill legend - Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and they train in the summer in his home country. I saw this as my opportunity as we have strong contacts in Oslo and I felt that we could do something a little different. It would be rather lame to photograph Mikaela on a ski slope. Norway has a strong heritage not just in skiing but in Polar exploration with Roald Amundsen...

Deuce

Deuce Palm Beach, Florida (2025) Archival Pigment Print Edition of 12 Standard Image size: 54" x 37" Framed size: 69" x 52" Large Image size: 81" x 56" Framed size: 96" x 71" David Yarrow's narrative: Deuce There is, of course, a tennis picture from the mid 1970s that adorned the walls of many a teenager’s home or a student’s frat house. Its popularity was not just its cheekiness, but also its simplicity. This was the era of Bjorn Borg and Chris Evert and the sport was very much on the rise in the public’s consciousness. It was the start of an era in which tennis landed an integral role within popular culture and the stars themselves often became sex symbols. Tennis was sexy. When filming our Palm Beach series, I had been given access to a beautiful home on North Country Drive just north of The Breakers. The property faced the Atlantic and the vast verdant lawns stretching to the beach were of Wimbledon standard. Towering palm trees soared to the sky breaking the symmetry and offered a definite sense of place. This was very clearly the ocean front...

Purgatory

Available in the following sizes: 52 x 63 inches, Edition of 12 71 x 87 inches, Edition of 12 “My plan was to build a set around an old Wild West railway line and go back 100 years. Perhaps we could then celebrate life on the final frontier with a photograph that could be printed large and benefit from the extraordinary resolution of modern-day cameras. I wanted a vignette with picturesque sentimentality. The community of Durango, Colorado was so supportive of the plan that 80 extras were sourced with no difficulty and there was warm approval to build the set near the main ski area...
