Metamorfose (2024) is part of Eduardo Rezende’s Janela do Tempo series, a body of work known for its remarkable ability to blur the boundaries between photography and painting. The textures appear so tactile and dimensional, the colors so layered and luminous, that viewers often question the medium. This painterly illusion is a defining characteristic of the series, transforming architectural ruins into vibrant, sculptural landscapes.
In this work, Rezende photographs the interior of a collapsing seaside structure, seen through the geometric openings of a pastel green cobogó wall. The repeated square frames create a rhythmic visual grid, guiding the viewer’s gaze into deeper layers of space—toward broken tiles, sun-washed walls, and, finally, the distant horizon line of the ocean. Each plane carries its own palette: soft greens, coral pinks, terracotta fragments, and the bright turquoise of the sky beyond.
The composition evokes a sense of transformation—hence the title Metamorfose. Architectural fragments become portals, ruins become patterns, and decay becomes a stage for new visual possibilities. Nothing here is inert: the structure seems to be transitioning, shifting between what it once was and what it is becoming. Rezende captures this moment of in-between with extraordinary clarity, allowing the viewer to sense both the fragility and the resilience embedded in the scene.
As with the broader Janela do Tempo series, the work turns overlooked spaces into contemplative studies of time, memory, and impermanence. The hyper-real textures and sculptural light give the piece a painterly presence, yet it maintains the precision and depth of fine-art photography.
