About the Item
Cosmos 47 by Karine Laval is a Limited Edition Chromogenic Print
Cosmos 47 is available in this size of 16" x 20" from a Limited Edition of 9 prints
Cosmos represents a new chapter for Karine Laval's decade-long body of work 'Heterotopia', which captures the public and private gardens across the world and transforms them into imaginary landscapes that could be other-worldly in appearance.
Is this the earth? Is this water? Is it even our planet?
These questions and more we might ask ourselves upon viewing Cosmos 47 by Karine Laval. Dried up stalks and stems cascade carelessly over one another in this portrait, which evokes an underwater sensation as though one was gazing up close at the placid surface of an ocean inlet.
The shades of blue and gentle green suffuse this underwater world.
Naturally found across gardens public and private, the Cosmos flower has powder blue petals and is characterised by a plethora of feathery leaves. Seen through a color-altering lens, the traditionally powder blue Cosmos turns a vivid pinky-red.
In Cosmos, Laval returns to a garden closer to home: her own. Adopting the same approach that has characterised her work on Heterotopia, that of the artist making temporary and non-invasive interventions in the natural landscapes, Laval once more transforms her space and transports her viewer into another world.
In Cosmos, the garden becomes a natural outdoor studio; small and lush meadows are filled with wildflowers and grasses, expanding Laval's exploration of nature, perception, and transformation.
Recently Laval was commissioned to produce a giant lightbox installation for the Christian Dior flagship store in New York. Laval was also commissioned by designer Peter Marino to produce artworks for the Cheval Blanc Hotel in the newly renovated La Samaritaine district in Paris.

Karine Laval
Born in Paris, Karine Laval currently lives and works in New York. Educated at the University of La Sorbonne and the University of ASSAS in Paris, she studied communication and journalism, and completed her education with photography and design courses at Cooper Union, SVA and the New School of New York. Since the beginning of her career, Laval has alternated agency and magazine commissions and publications (Here is New York 2002) with an artistic practice, that combines portraiture of personalities from the cultural world with images of geographical locations (France, Norway, Portugal, Cuba) and visual narratives. Her photographs are notably spontaneous and reminiscent of the photographs of masters such as Henri Cartier-Bresson or William Eggleston, with whom she shares a similar use of color as an expressive tool. This is evident in The Pool, which focuses on the leisurely environments of swimming pools and outdoor lidos in summertime. Laval’s images transport viewers into naïve atmospheres that capture the feeling as well as the substance of everyday life in the twenty-first century. Her work has also been widely exhibited in the United States and Europe at festivals and institutions such as the Palais de Tokyo (Paris, France), Lodz Festival (Poland), Rhubarb-Rhubarb (Birmingham, UK), and Les Rencontres d’Arles (France) as well as major solo shows at the Bonni Benrubi Gallery in New York and M+B Gallery in Los Angeles. Her work has been acquired by the Citibank Collection (New York), the Henry Buhl Collection (New York) and was exhibited as part of the Buhl Foundation Collection at the Guggenheim Museum, Collection Corbière (Paris) and the Contemporanea Collection (Rio de Janeiro).
