About the Item

"Marilyn Monroe, 1962" Photography 24 x 16 in Edition 3/35 by Lawrence Schiller Silver Gelatin print Edition 3/35 Signed and numbered on recto by the artist Printed later On Wednesday, May 23, 1962, Marilyn Monroe stepped onto the set of Something’s Got to Give to film what would become one of the most iconic and talked-about moments of her career: the now-legendary nude swimming pool scene. This extraordinary day—captured in a series of rare photographs by renowned photographer Lawrence Schiller—has since become a cornerstone of Hollywood history. Key moments that make this session truly historic: A Bold Cinematic First: Monroe spent nearly four hours in the pool on the 20th Century Fox lot, filming a sequence in which her character, Ellen Arden, appears to swim nude after being presumed lost at sea. At the time, no major Hollywood star had ever agreed to be photographed naked at the height of her fame for a mainstream studio production. Monroe’s decision was groundbreaking—an act of both artistic boldness and personal confidence that electrified the press. A Carefully Orchestrated Media Sensation: To maximize anticipation for the film, 20th Century Fox invited select members of the press and handpicked photographers to document the scene. Among them was Lawrence Schiller, whose extraordinary images from that day generated enormous headlines and ultimately sold for sums exceeding Monroe’s entire salary for the film. His photographs captured not just her beauty but also her vulnerability, humor, and undeniable power in front of the camera. One of the Final Glimpses of a Legend: This shoot, just days after Monroe’s iconic “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” performance and shortly before her tragic passing, makes these photographs some of her last, adding profound emotional and historical significance. Owning one of these limited-edition fine art photographs means possessing a rare piece of cultural history that shaped Hollywood's legacy. Each print from this session marks a pivotal moment in Hollywood history, showcasing a rare blend of vulnerability and glamour that defines Monroe's legacy, with editions so limited that owning one is a unique privilege. This is a rare opportunity to own a photograph created during a fleeting moment when Marilyn Monroe, Lawrence Schiller, and Hollywood history intersected, making it an irreplaceable keepsake of an unforgettable afternoon. Lawrence Schiller: Director, Author, and Hollywood Photographer. Marilyn Monroe is a constant presence in American culture, perhaps because she helped usher in a new era of sexuality. As she changed from the ingénue Norma Jean to the glamorous Marilyn, the country also changed, demanding and consuming her legendary sexual radiance; she completely captured the hearts and minds of America.   Her persona still entrances the world; several of the pictures from the shoot appeared on the cover of LIFE magazine, accompanied by the risqué text reading “Marilyn Monroe, a skinny-dip you’ll never see on the screen.” After the shoot, Lawrence Schiller’s prominence continued to grow. He worked in multiple capacities as a director, an author, and a Hollywood photographer. He would shoot other Hollywood legends through his adventurous, fresh eyes, although Marilyn would remain an essential part of his career. Schiller worked for LIFE, Paris Match, Time, Newsweek, and Stern and directed seven motion pictures.
