About the Item

In 1981 Maggie Taylor (b. 1961) began to photograph while she was a student at Yale University majoring in philosophy. She primarily took photographs of suburban landscapes and strange objects found in yards. In 1985 she enrolled in graduate school at The University of Florida where she encountered a much broader acceptance of manipulated and fabricated photography, both among teachers and fellow students. Her work is featured in Adobe Photoshop Master Class: Maggie Taylor’s Landscape of Dreams, Solutions Beginning with A, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Album, Edizioni Siz, and No Ordinary Days. Taylor’s images have been exhibited in one-person exhibitions worldwide and are in numerous public and private collections including The Art Museum, Princeton University, The Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, Harn Museum of Art, University of Florida; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and The Museum of Photography, Seoul, Korea. In 1996 and 2001, she received State of Florida Individual Artist’s Fellowships. In 2004, she won the Santa Fe Center for Photography’s Project Competition. In 2005 she received the Ultimate Eye Foundation Grant. She lives in Gainesville, Florida. Maggie’s tools are a flatbed scanner, a small digital camera and a computer and more recently, elements of A.I. Her materials are found at flea markets and garage sales. Her inspiration often comes from the objects and old photographs she collects, mingled with her own dreams and memories. These images are open to interpretation by the viewer and they are meant to be both playful and disturbing. The finished limited-edition prints are made on an Iris inkjet printer on a slightly textured matte paper. 48 x 48 inch as dye sublimation on aluminum and 58 x 58 inch on paper may be available so please contact us!

photo-eye Gallery is very excited to share twelve new works from represented artist Maggie Taylor. After completing her prodigious series of illustrations for Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-glass, a project spanning more than three years, Taylor continues to create whimsical surrealistic photomontages using her signature technique – a process she's pioneered for more than twenty years. The inspiration for the work is personal, societal, and intuitive. "For the last three years, I primarily focused my creative energy on my series of Through the Looking-glass images: Alice, the Tweedles, Walruses, Carpenters and all. Even before that, I had been collecting daguerreotypes and other antique photographs of girls who looked like potential Alices for years to prepare for the series. When the book went to press late last year I breathed a sigh of relief and started to open other images to work on. But, one day last spring I opened the Alice folder on my Mac to see what other girls I might have that had not been included in the book project. It turned out I used all that I had, no extras. So for some reason, I felt excited about taking a few of my favorite girls and putting them in a new image. As I started to piece the image The girls...
