"Some Assembly Required" by Margeaux Walter is an aerial view of two swimwear-clad figures—both performed by the artist herself—sunbathing on a sandy beach, decked out in outfits made from iconic blue and yellow Ikea bags and lying on a blue and yellow Ikea bag towel. An umbrella, also made from Ikea bags, offers the figures a measure of shade. "Some Assembly Required" is printed as a dye sublimation print on aluminum. Price refers to mounted print with hanging hardware. The work is signed by the artist on the back. Please contact gallery for more information. "Some Assembly Required" comes from Margeaux Walter's series "Believe Me." According to the artist: "'Believe Me’, named after Trump’s most frequently used two-word phrase, is a series of photographs resembling surveillance images that one might find in Google Earth. Mimicking augmented realities, I am staging site-specific temporary installations in the environment that challenge our current post-fact world influenced by scripted and hyperbolic reality television, fake news, sensational journalism and virtual experiences. Thinking about the increasing effect of plastic on our environments, ecosystems, oceans, animal life, and health, many of these images focus on consumer culture, climate change denial, and the elusive ways these topics are portrayed throughout various media outlets. By performing the characters in each scene and giving control over to a drone, I become a puppet in the process, flipping the relationship between photographer and subject as well as referencing contemporary surveillance practices. The nature of this type of extreme aerial imagery and how it’s used (for Google Maps, drone strikes, breaking news and policing), creates a certainty for the viewer and a validation of authenticity. A God’s-eye view taken at face value." Margeaux Walter received her MFA from Hunter College in 2014 and her BFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in 2006. She has received multiple honors from the Magenta Foundation Flash Forward, HeadOn Photo Festival, Photolucida, Prix de la Photographie Paris, International Photography Awards, and other organizations. She has been awarded artist-in-residence programs at Montalvo Arts Center, MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, Marble House Project, VCCA, Red Gate Gallery in Beijing and BigCi in Bilpin, Australia (Environmental award). Currently she is the recipient of the Sony Alpha Female Award (2020). She is represented by Winston Wachter Fine Art in NY, and Foto Relevance in Houston, TX, and has participated in dozens of exhibitions at institutions such as MOCA in Los Angeles, CA, Hunterdon Art Museum in Clinton, NJ, The Center for Photography in Woodstock, NY, Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga, CA, Sonoma County Museum in Santa Rosa, CA, Tacoma Art Museum in Tacoma, WA, and the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, MA. Her work has been featured in publications including The New York Times, New York Post, Seattle Times, Boston Globe, and Blouin Art Info.
