Not mounted. Stefanie Schneider: Fragments of a Fading Dream The American Dream was always part fiction, a mirage shimmering on the horizon. Stefanie Schneider doesn’t chase it—she captures its slow disintegration, frame by frame, letting time and chemistry tell the truth. Her work isn’t just about memory; it’s about what happens when memory outlasts the thing it was meant to preserve. The California in Schneider’s images is not the golden land of manifest destiny, but its aftermath. Her Polaroids, eroded by time and chance, reflect a country where the paint is peeling, the highways are empty, and yesterday’s promises are fading like sun-bleached motel signs. The people in her images—lovers, drifters, dreamers—aren’t moving forward, they’re suspended, caught in the residue of something that once felt endless. Like America itself, they exist in a space between possibility and ruin, between the dream and the waking. Her use of expired Polaroid film is no accident. The distortions, the chemical burns, the way the colors run and dissolve—these aren’t embellishments; they are the medium telling its own story. Just as the dream is breaking down, so is the film that captures it. In Schneider’s work, image and idea collapse together, one mirroring the other. The faded hues aren’t just aesthetic; they’re an echo of something lost. And yet, for all its decay, her world is not cynical. There is tenderness in the unraveling, poetry in the imperfections. The American Dream may be fraying at the edges, but there’s still beauty in the pieces that remain. Maybe, Schneider suggests, the dream was never meant to last—but in its flickering afterglow, there is something raw, something real, something worth holding onto. Stefanie Schneider received her MFA in Communication Design at the Folkwang Schule Essen, Germany. Her work has been shown at the Museum for Photography, Braunschweig, Museum für Kommunikation, Berlin, the Institut für Neue Medien, Frankfurt, the Nassauischer Kunstverein, Wiesbaden, Kunstverein Bielefeld, Museum für Moderne Kunst Passau, Les Rencontres d'Arles, Foto -Triennale Esslingen, Bombay Beach Biennale 2018, 2019.

Long exposure figurative Photography: Illuminations No. 53
By Florence Montmare
Located in New York, NY
'Illuminations started in 2002 when a relationship was slowly falling apart. While trying to save it, we rented a large stylish apartment in Stockholm, and then later one in Arles, France, hoping that a change of scene would have a posi-tive effect. The new spaces made the distance between us more acute, and the inevitable break even more obvious. The ritual of making one photograph each night became crucial to me. I left the camera shutter open for 3 to 8 hours in a darkened bedroom, and as the morning light arrived I interrupted the exposure. It is a private journal, documenting time and memory, where present meets past.' Born in Vienna to Swedish and Greek parents and raised in Stockholm, Florence Montmare has an MBA in Design Management from Linnaeus University, Sweden and studied at the School of Visual Arts. A graduate of International Center of Photography, New York, she collaborated with artist Sam Samore...
