Stefanie Schneider’s Sidewinder triptych is a portal—an open doorway caught between presence and absence, between departure and return. The Airstream’s entrance is both an invitation and a question, framed by a sun-bleached towel that sways like a forgotten flag. Time pools here, uncertain, shimmering in the chemical colors that ripple across the film. Are we arriving, or have we just left?
The desert hums beyond the threshold, endless and indifferent. Light leaks and chemical blooms distort the scene, warping reality like memory bending to feeling. The past is not gone; it’s stained into the image, lingering in hues too vivid to be real, yet too familiar to be false. This is not just a place—it’s a sensation, a moment stretched across three frames, resisting time’s linear pull.
There is no figure, no defined narrative—only the silent suggestion of life, the trace of something just beyond sight. The door is open, but where does it lead? Sidewinder doesn’t answer. It lets time hang in the heat, inviting us to step forward, to step back, or simply to exist in the in-between.
Stefanie Schneider received her MFA in Communication Design at the Folkwang Schule Essen, Germany. Her work has been shown at the Museum for Photography, Braunschweig, Museum für Kommunikation, Berlin, the Institut für Neue Medien, Frankfurt, the Nassauischer Kunstverein, Wiesbaden, Kunstverein Bielefeld, Museum für Moderne Kunst Passau, Les Rencontres d'Arles, Foto -Triennale Esslingen, Bombay Beach Biennale 2018.
