About the Item
Blue Lotus, 2003 is a contemporary color photograph by Japanese artist Tadayuki Naito. Naito created a series on the blue lotus, a flower of peace and hope. The artist’s desire was to express the intrinsically Japanese aesthetic of embodiment of the “perfection of wisdom.” The blue lotus symbolizes victory of the spirit over the senses, intelligence, wisdom, and ultimately knowledge. The archival pigment print on Hahnemule Fine Art paper is hand-signed by the photographer. Printed 2005 under the direction of the photographer the photograph is from the portfolio "Masters of Modern Photography. Japan." Available edition: 28/100 and 87/100. The photograph was also published in Blue Lotus (Hyogensha Tokyo, 2005). Provenance: Private Collector

Artist’s Bio: Tadayuki Naito was born in Tokyo in 1941. Miles Davis and jazz music captured his attention at age 17 and in his early 20s he began taking photographs of leading jazz musicians and their live stage performances. In 1970, he set up his own company, Photohouse OM, and published a photobook on Terumasa Hino, a trumpet player of his generation. One of Naito’s life-long interests was to capture photographically the powerful performances of musicians in the jazz world. The photographer took extensive trips to Africa, Asia, and America, and made many photographs. The results of these trips make up the artist’s photo series The Songs of Africa (Tokyo Shinbunsha, 1982) and Zebra (Joho Center Tokyo, 1988). The images are included in exhibitions, publications and in graphic design and textile projects.
