This photograph is the first in the African Victorian series. It references Rembrandt’s 1634 painting Saskia as Flora, which portrays the artist’s wife, Saskia van Uylenburgh, as the goddess Flora. Here, the photographer reinterprets the artwork, relocating the subject to Africa and featuring a Black African woman adorned with local domestic objects and clothing. Her intention is to “think about the image of the black female in western art and what it would mean placing an African woman in the realm of mainstream art history.” African Victorian marks the artist’s debut series, where she merges elements of African heritage with Victorian aesthetics in an unexpected way. Collaborating with a local designer, she created Victorian-style dresses using African fabrics. In doing so, Tamary Kudita reclaims a Western visual tradition, embedding it within an African setting. These grand, ornate garments “illuminate once invisible bodies by making them hyper-visible.” The series presents a powerful image of the African woman—confident, independent, and deeply rooted in her cultural identity. “Through photography, I explore the place of African fabric in the refashioning of cultural, racial and gendered identities as well as its use as a vehicle to challenge structures of power that render certain people’s histories and cultural expressions invisible.” —Tamary Kudita Zimbabwean artist Tamary Kudita’s photographic portraits delve into the intricacies of African identity. They provide an authentic representation that counters colonial stereotypes while conveying a dignified and self-assured vision of her subjects. She adopts a fresh perspective to highlight both personal and collective narratives that have been forgotten or erased. With meticulous attention to detail, she shapes each portrait—using everyday objects, elaborate hairstyles, and above all, symbolic, opulent clothing—to reveal the essence of her subjects. Her work brings to life a world that oscillates between reality and fantasy, achieving a refined aesthetic that harmonizes historical and contemporary influences. “My photography is about making connections—between dreams and reality, and between the past, present, and future.” —Tamary Kudita Since 2000, Tamary Kudita has exhibited in galleries, fairs, and institutions across Africa and beyond. In 2021, she became the first African woman to win the prestigious Open Photographer of the Year award at the Sony World Photography Awards. Her work has been acquired by the esteemed photography collection of the Fitchburg Art Museum (Massachusetts, USA) and has been featured in major international media outlets, including BBC News, CNN International, Forbes, Huffington Post, and Vogue Italia.
