About the Item

The serie project "Recipes to consume without moderation" with the support of Institute du monde arabe Paris (France) was exhibited at MaMa museum of contemporary and modern art at Algiers (Algeria) exhibition titled "The gaze of arab photographers" in 2007. Text written by Michket Krifa, Art Critic and Visual Arts Commissioner for Africa and the Middle East The intrepid photographer in Algeria, Amina ZOUBIR introduces herself as a fully-fledged artist and claims a part of this territory which she occupies through a series of images, sketches of a statement. This audacity mixed with innocence fearless, can seem irritating, and touched by spontaneity and naturalness. Amina reaches her world, people but also art with this mixture of ease with the « street culture » of the young people of her generation and the legacy of a very oriental shyness, inviting us feeling oriental erotism with decency. At first, her women-food recipes of holy month of Ramadan, a combination of texts and images, seem to have come from an advertising billboard or a fashion magazine. The photos are close-ups of the sensual curves of modern women in jeans whose faces we cannot see, deliberately suggestive, even sexy, in black and white « washed-out » strips. In each photograph, on these curves, there is a recipe from the month of Ramadan and everyday meals like pasta, salad. Zoubir's intention is to disturb the curves of the female body (bottom, chest, stomach) with the recipes of the holy month. The combination of the two is her ironic way, to contest and denounce the closing borders of femininity in an arab muslim society where women are either a foster mothers and sacred, or women liberated, and therefore comestible and no-respected. These food recipes, where some words are in relief in a different colour, give instructions on how to consume sexually a women including a kind of assumed erotism. Hot, burning, fresh, mixed… It is not a coincidence that the lettering of these recipes is similar to that of fashion magazines or advertising billboards, which support eroticism and mercantile femininity, to be consumed in moderation. Biography Visual artist and videomaker, Amina Zoubir graduated a Master Theory and practice of contemporary art and new media from the University Paris 8 and a DESA Graphic design obtained in 2006 at the School of Fine Arts in Algiers. Her artworks are exhibited at Lahore Biennale (2020) and had been exhibited at La Biennale Di Venezia, Algerian Pavilion (2019), and other Biennales at Cairo (2019), Dakar Biennale (2018), Lagos Biennale (2017), Casablanca Biennale (2016), Addis FotoFest (2014), Lagos Photo Festival (2017), Biennale BY14 Yakutsk Russia (2014), and Exhibitions at MAXXI Museum, MUSAC Museum, CAAM, Torrance Art Museum California USA, MAMA Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Algiers Algeria, at group shows at PasaJist Gallery in Istanbul Turkey, Pink Gallery in Seoul South Korea, Vovatanya Gallery in Kharkiv Ukraine, Photon Center for Contemporary Photography in Ljubljana Slovenia, Artos Foundation in Nicosia Cyprus, TAC in Eindhoven Netherlands, French Cultural Centre of Douala in Cameroon, Leonardo Palazzo darte contemporano in Turin Italy. Zoubir was in residency at the Bag Factory in Johannesburg South Africa (2019), at Cité Internationale des arts in Paris France (2014), at Fondation Michelangelo Pistoletto in Bari Italy (2008), at Videochroniques Aflam in Marseille France (2010), Cinémathèque de Tanger Maroc (2013). Amina ZOUBIR was awarded the Varenne Web&Doc FIGRA 2013 (France) with a spécial motion for her performances Take your place during A Summer in Algiers (2012). Her artworks had been included in public collections at Fondation Donwahi (Abidjan, Ivory Cost), FRAC Occitanie Fond Régional Art Contemporain Les Abattoirs (Toulouse, France), African Artists for Development (Paris, France).

A fan of photography since her early childhood, Mizrakli graduated from Yeditepe University in Istanbul, Interior Decoration Department, and continued her higher education in London, where she started out her work as a photographer. Later on, she moved to New York to further develop her career as a photographer and enrolled in classes at the Photography Department of the New York Film Academy. She received a Master’s Degree in photography in Los Angeles, where she is currently based. Mizrakli has conducted many shooting sessions for Mica Studios and Bullet Magazine in New York and had two solo exhibitions in Los Angeles. She has recently participated in the Contemporary Istanbul Exhibition (November 2013). In some of her black and white works she uses the human body only as a pictorial sign in order to create almost abstract works.
