Vintage photograph by Albert Rudomine. The subject is Auguste Rodin's sculpture "Thought Emerging from Matter". Silver gelatin photograph. Circa 1940. Stamped on back. Matted. Photograph measures 9" x 7".
Albert Rudomine (1892–1975) was a French photographer, originally from Russia, known for his portraits, photojournalism, and photographs of the human figure. He established a studio in Paris and later worked for the French National Museums.
Early life and career
Born in Kiev in 1892, his family moved to Paris and then to New York in 1901.
He initially studied Hebrew theology in New York before enlisting in the French Foreign Legion in 1915, serving for two years.
After being discharged, he settled in Paris in 1917 and briefly worked as a dressmaker.
By 1920, he was working as a photojournalist for L'Illustration magazine.
He established his own photography studio in Paris in 1923, where he specialized in portraits and nude studies.
During the 1940s, Rudomine was employed as the official photographer at the Musée Rodin in Paris.
His photographs of Auguste Rodin's sculptures were published in 1950 in a collection titled Rodin Inconnu.
He also printed a portfolio of images using early negatives and photographic papers from the same era.
Rudomine's work is held in the collections of major institutions such as the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
