The photograph is framed to the line and crop indicated by the photographer on the print, behind museum quality UV non-reflective glass. (A Fresson print is a type of photographic printing, created in 1899, that has been passed down in the family for four generations. Still to this day, the Fresson family keeps some elements of the process a secret but make sure it stays alive. Located in the outskirts of Paris, their workshop is the only one in the world to produce such prints.)
Albin-Guillot studied drawing and painting before becoming interested in photography. In 1925, she went on to have the first one-person exhibition at the Paris Autumn Salon. She also served as president of the French Societe des Artistes Photographes and in June 1928, was included in the first independent Salon of Photography in Paris. Published in 1932, she took a series of male nudes taken for Henry de Motherlant’s La Deesse Cypris. At the petrol station is an original vintage silver salts photograph, made by the great Russian Constructivist artist Aleksandr Michajlovic Rodčenko (Saint Petersburg, 1891 - Moscow, 1956) in 1935 ca.
Printed later, presumably between the 1940s and the 1950s.
In very good conditions, it is rare and precious. A scene of ordinary life is portrayed in an unusual point of view. The oblique cuts, the use of diagonal as the dynamics of this image, the close position of the machine are constants of Rodčenko'style and something of absolutely revolutionary and innovative at that time in the field of photography!

About Edward Quigley:
Edward Quigley was a leading American modernist who became known in the 1930s for his experimental photographic work with light. Quigley acquired his first camera at age twelve, joined the Photographic Society of Philadelphia in1929, and opened his own studio a year later. He supported himself with innovative advertising and editorial work published regularly in magazines such as U.S. Camera and Photographie, while winning prizes in numerous salons for his experimental light abstractions, captured with the aid of prisms and lenses to startling affect. Today, photographs by Edward Quigley are housed in the permanent collections of The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
