About the Item
Ryan McGinley (b. 1977) is arguably the most renowned photographer of his generation. At 25 years old, he was the youngest artist to ever have a solo show at the Whitney (2003).
Over the past two decades, McGinley has proven himself to be the successor to both Nan Goldin and Larry Clark with a unique documentary style that portrays the idealisms and realities of a generation.
McGinley's work captures the optimism, rebellion and hedonism experienced by friends and lovers in and around New York City. Artists, like the late Dash Snow and Dan Colen, regularly make appearances in his images.
"Crash" is an image that sits at the perfect intersection of McGinley's most cherished elements: portraiture of youth who exist freely, at play in nature. This photograph is an iconic paradigm of his celebratory, sexy, and unapologetic practice.
During this era, McGinley worked almost exclusively in a 40" x 30" print format. It is quite rare to find an image from the period in this more intimate size. This luminous portrait perfectly demonstrates Ryan McGinley's iconic mastery at portraying the fleeting feeling of youth.
While McGinley established his reputation with joyful images such as this one, he has gradually evolved into one of the most sought-after portrait photographers. Today, his work regularly appears in magazines including Vanity Fair and the New York Times magazine.

Ryan McGinley
Ryan McGinley is a photographer living in New York City. Longtime friends with fellow artists Dan Colen and the late Dash Snow, McGinley's work often features seemingly real-life situations that have been staged and cast. Populating his images with personal friends, McGinley achieves a heightened level of intimacy with his subjects, a quality made obvious by their perceived lack of inhibition. As a result, his work emits an undeniable spontaneity, despite its staged production. Amongst his achievements, McGinley was one of the youngest artists ever to have a solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
