George Tice is one of the finest American photographers of his generation. His body of work has continually focused on the American rural and suburban landscape. This platinum print photograph, from the Lancaster, Pennsylvania series, concentrates on the daily life of the Amish people and their integration with the landscape around them. The black and white image features several Amish boys playing in the snow. The captured children, clothed in black suits and wide-brimmed hats, emanate a youthful spirit that seems to displace presupposed notions of their modest culture. Tice, especially well known for his printing skill, successfully produced works that identify with the various facets of American society.
