About the Item

Archival Pigment Print Mounted and Framed Museum Standards Available sizes: 40 x 60 inches edition of 7 48 x 72 inches edition of 7 Certificate of Authenticity, Signed by the Artist. Cristiano Xavier has been dedicated to photography since 1997, building over two decades a body of work marked by technical rigor, contemplative poetics, and a profound devotion to the natural world. In 2003 he moved to the United States, where he deepened his study of landscape photography and engaged with the legacy of Ansel Adams, Art Wolfe, and Galen Rowell. During this period, he developed a distinctive practice in night photography and light painting, using both digital and analog processes to reveal atmospheres invisible to the naked eye. Trees.central to his visual inquiry. emerge as solitary protagonists that Xavier seeks out in some of the most remote regions of the planet. His extensive travels in pursuit of rare and isolated specimens have taken him across continents—through Mongolia, Socotra, Saudi Arabia, the Lofoten Islands, Iran, Namibia, Cuba, Nepal, the Yukon, Bhutan, Iceland, Madeira, France, the Dolomites, Tanzania, Arizona, Peru, the Atacama Desert, Bolivia, the Lençóis Maranhenses, Patagonia, Indonesia, and the interior of the United States, where he also leads tornado-chasing expeditions. Since 2011, he has guided photographic journeys to diverse landscapes around the world, sharing his understanding of light, time, and the ethics of observing nature. “My wish, in showing what is seldom seen, is to awaken people to this beauty,” he says. Cristiano’s career has been recognized with numerous awards in Brazil and abroad. Highlights include first place in the International Landscape Photographer of the Year 2017 – Abstract Aerial Award; the best placement by a Brazilian photographer in the Epson Pano Awards 2017 – Nature/Landscape; two honorable mentions in the Nature Conservancy 2022 competition; first place in the IPA Photo Awards 2023 with his Treelogy series; first place in the Mangroove Photo Awards 2023; and his distinction as the only Brazilian among the Merit Medalists of the HIPA Photo Awards 2023, the largest photography competition in the world, with the series Insoluble. In 2018 he published MAGNA, released by Vento Leste, an ode to nature in its most pristine state. The book received first place in the Fernando Pini Award 2018, the most prestigious graphic excellence prize in Latin America. In 2024, he released TREELOGIA, the culmination of twenty-three years of global travel and study of trees. Also awarded first place in the Fernando Pini Award 2024 for art book, the publication consolidates the philosophical, poetic, and technical maturity of his practice. Cristiano Xavier’s work is distinguished by a nearly metaphysical presence: his images transcend the traditional balance between form and content through an exacting technique that never subdues nature but instead reveals its unseen force. Isolation, silence, absence, and rarefaction become languages in themselves. These are not photographs meant for conventional interpretation; they invite intuition, stillness, and the creative void that connects the viewer to the cosmos. His nocturnal landscapes evoke meditation, an encounter between physics, poetry, and perception. Consistent, evolving, and unmistakable, Xavier’s practice expands contemporary understandings of the relationship between humans, light, and the natural world. Exhibited in galleries in Brazil, the United States, and Paris, his work affirms him as one of the most compelling voices in nature photography today, renewing our capacity to perceive the invisible and to appreciate the silent mystery that shapes the living world.
