"Traditional 84" exemplifies Reinfeld's signature style of textured and abstract imagery, with branches undulating skyward and a scattering of yellow leaves. With its autumnal tones and curved lines, the work elevates and transforms nature beyond our everyday perception, resulting in an unconventional and painterly-looking landscape work. While much of Reinfeld's work involves constructing digital composites with layers of photographs, "Traditional 84" stays true to its name in that it is a straight photographic capture sans layering. "Traditional 84" comes from a selection entitled "Landscape Visions," a portfolio poised between the study of art and science. As a scientist involved with physics—particularly quantum and relativity theory—Reinfeld is consumed with how things are seen, what they are, and how they came to be. Layered into his imagery is a condition that affects how he sees: binocular diplopia, or double vision. As an artist, Reinfeld shares how the world looks through his eyes, abstracted by a biological condition, science, and a love of modern art surrealism and abstraction. Born in New York City, David Reinfeld began his photographic career in the 60s in New York City, honing skills as a street photographer, both taking pictures and protesting. This period was his “coming of age”; photography became his first love, and would last forever. In the early 70s, Reinfeld received his MFA Photography at the Rhode Island School of Design, taught by the likes of Aaron Siskind. Influenced by the experimental nature of art during this period, Reinfeld looked for and created abstraction in his images. He photographed graffiti and decayed walls anywhere he could find them, building a library of images that he continues to draw from today. The emergence of digital photographic tools ultimately led Reinfeld to digital composite photography, yielding his distinctive style of layering dozens of images to generate photographs boasting an impressive variety of shapes, colors, and textures. Much of his work is characterized through a recurring motif of trees. For Reinfeld, art is not only an arrangement of form and content, but also of awareness of visual impact and communication.
