In this photograph by award-winning British photographer Ellie Davies, the ancient natural landscape is darkened by the shadows of the twilight hour.
Dark fir trees lean gracefully in the air against a smooth blue backdrop of coastal skies. Photographed at dusk, when the supernatural veil between worlds is at its weakest, Ebb
Flow 2 captures the mystery of ancient worlds.
The soft white clouds in this smooth cornflower-blue sky appear to be dragged across the firmament, perhaps a subtle hint at the worries faced by the natural world itself.
In her new body of work, Ebb
Flow, Davies situates herself on the byways connecting one ancient land to another.
Between Dorset and Cornwall are the South West Coast Path and the South Dorset Ridgeway, two elevated byways whose routes to modern towns still evoke the ancient peoples that used them as vantage points and safe trails through hostile lands, as well as for sacred sites for religious rites.
The hillforts of Chalbury and Maiden Castle date from the Neolithic period to the Bronze Age. Standing in these places the past feels close, but the contemporary human intrusion on this peaceful natural environment is evident.
Man-made pollutants move from one landscape to another, sometimes visible, other times not. Always there remains a cross-contamination of one ecosystem to another.
In Ebb
Flow, Davies continues her established practice of impermanent interventions in the natural landscape in order to highlight the environmental concerns that exist.
Here, in Ebb
Flow, Davies responds to that invisible cross-contamination of ecosystems by her creation of false clouds that float across placid skies above these ancient landscapes. These clouds appear natural, but they don't belong; they foreshadow the ecological concerns of environmental pressures against an ancient world that teeters on the brink.

Ellie Davies
Ellie Davies is a fine art photographer who completed an MA in photography at the London College of Communication in 2008. Davies has been working in the forests of the UK for the past seven years, producing work that explores the complex interrelationship between the landscape and the individual. Her career goes from strength to strength. In 2017, she won the Magnum Photography Award, Fine Art Category and The People's Choice Award at the Aesthetica Art Prize 2016 both for her Stars series. She has also been awarded prizes at many prestigious Art Awards, including 1st place in the 2015 Smithsonian Photo Contest. She was recognized at the Barcelona International Photography Awards - Top 50 Photographers 2015 and was the Selectors Choice of the Royal Photographic Society’s 2015 Annual Exhibition. Davies has also been awarded the Kontinent Awards (2014), Art Gemini (2014), the Professional Women Photographers International Juried Exhibition (2012), Lens Culture International Exposure Awards (2011) and the PX3 Paris Prix de la Awards (2010). Her work has been extensively exhibited in solo and group shows in The Netherlands, London, Paris, Budapest, Kyiv, Moscow, St. Petersburg, The Rencontres d'Arles and last year at The Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Center, Northern Ireland and the Houston Centre for Photography. Davies’s work explores the fabricated nature of the landscape by making a variety of temporary and non-invasive interventions in the forest, which places the viewer in the gap between reality and fantasy. Creating this space encourages the viewer to re-evaluate how their relationship with the landscape is formed, and the extent to which it is a product of cultural heritage or personal experience.

Artist statement:
Nature provides the perfect model of beauty, according to Plato and Socrates. In the classical period, something was considered beautiful because it existed in nature; art was secondary. In the 18th Century, the German philosopher Johann Joachim Winckelmann argued against the idea that art imitates life, believing that qualities superior to nature are found in art, specifically, ideal beauty, and “brain-born images”. Neoclassical thought represented that art need not serve any end other than its own existence. For me, beauty is an ideal, nature is real, and art comes from the brain.
I take pictures in nature, finding shifting, disparate, and beautiful landscapes. I develop my pictures of trees...
