About the Item

This vintage black and white photograph by Harold E. Malde (1923–2007) presents a compelling view of the Chetro Ketl Ruins in Nageezi, New Mexico, one of the most significant architectural sites of the Ancestral Puebloan world. Malde’s thoughtful composition emphasizes the monumental scale and precise geometry of this historic great house, capturing both its archaeological importance and timeless visual presence. Constructed between 990 and 1075 CE, Chetro Ketl was among the largest and most complex great houses within the Chaco Canyon cultural system, serving as a major residential, ceremonial, and administrative center. The photograph’s black and white format heightens contrasts of light and shadow, drawing attention to the stone masonry, structural rhythm, and enduring strength of the site within the Northern New Mexico landscape. The work is carefully presented in an archival mat, preserving the photograph while allowing its historical character to remain the focal point. Offered unframed, the piece provides collectors with the flexibility to select custom framing that complements both the artwork and their interior. A refined example of Southwestern documentary photography, this photograph will appeal to collectors of fine art photography, Indigenous architectural history, archaeological imagery, and New Mexico regional art.
