About the Item

A pleasing watercolor painting by San Francisco Bay Area artist Jason Schoener. Schoener was the nephew of East Coast painter William Zorach, and stylistically there are some similarities in their work. Schoener and his wife had a cabin and studio just down the road from the Zorach farm in Maine. Schoener and his wife spent nearly every summer at their cabin in Maine and visited William and his wife and fellow artist Marguerite Zorach, often. Jason studied art in Cleveland, and New York, and later taught art out East, before taking a teaching position at California College of Arts, where he taught for 40 plus years. Schoener’s early paintings were narrative, and bordered on social realism, and featuring the working men and women he encountered in his daily life. By mid-career, Jason was primarily painting abstract landscapes. This work appears to date from Schoener's first years in the San Francisco Bay Area.
