The iconic Golden Gate bridge looms out of a dusky sky in this evocative and introspective portrait of the impressive orange giant construction. A soft blue haze surrounds the apex of the tower, like a halo.
Spanning the breadth of the Golden Gate, the one-mile-wide strait that connects San Francisco Bay with the Pacific Ocean, the Golden Gate bridge has long been a focus and destination for photographers seeking iconography in the world.
This portrait of the Golden Gate bridge by Jo Crowther is unusual and unexpected. Instead of vainly trying to capture the engineering behemoth in its entirety, Crowther isolates a section of one of the bridge, focussing her lens on one of the two towers that sear up into the sky.
In her portrait she captures the quiet magnificence of this feat of engineering. From the Art Deco accents that decorate the tower, to the early signs of rust that cascade down the suspension cables.
This is a living portrait, with the rows of traffic trundling slowly underneath, and crocodiles of pedestrians desperately trying to cross the bridge and the traffic in order to capture the perfect shot.
Crowther's portrait is understated. It lifts the Golden Gate bridge out of itself, allowing the engineering giant itself to speak.

Jo Crowther
Jo Crowther was born in York in 1963 and a childhood of much traveling resulted in her attending 14 different schools. The constant travel heightened her observation skills and awareness of her surroundings and Crowther began recording her daily life through photography and processing and printing her photos at age 14. Her early 20s were divided between assisting an advertising location photographer and traveling extensively on her projects to Asia, America and Australia. In 1995, Crowther won her first award in the landscape section from the Association of Photographers for the image ‘Pyramids.’ A silver award soon followed this from the Royal Photographic Society. Commissioned by the Royal Mail in 1999, Crowther worked with Pentagram to produce a stamped image for the Millennium series, which went on to win a prestigious Design Art Director’s award. Crowther specializes in photographing natural surroundings in soothing sepia tones, the warm tones and dramatic light and shadows of these introspective images often present reality from a slightly abstract perspective. Crowther has exhibited extensively in the UK, as well as around Europe.
