About the Item

This gorgeous photograph captures the turquoise blue and green water and walled geometric shapes in cool grey of a slate quarry and dam at Papagaio, Brazil. Available in limited edition of 3 high quality archival pigment prints, signed by the artist on the reverse. A portion of the proceeds of sale go to the mining community where this photograph was taken. Please inquire about framing options. The town self declared itself the “World’s Slate Capital”. The large expansion of slate production, associated with the small recovery of degraded areas and the use of tailings, has led to technical and environmental problems that may make this activity unfeasible if short-term measures are not taken. Slate is heavily used in the U.S. for roofing, flooring, and flagging because of its durability and nice appearance. 19°28’39.9” S 44°47’23.7” W Júlia Pontés (b.1983 - Minas Gerais, Brazil) - Based in São Paulo and New York. Her work will be displayed at the Art Museum of the Americas, in D.C. in 2019. She has a polarized practice that involves documenting stories linked to her own life experiences and, on the other hand, a self portraiture practice. In both, she applies experimental techniques, the use of different mediums and archive material. Currently, she is dedicated to a social and environmental project about mining. This activity is deeply rooted in the Brazilian State of Minas Gerais, that it runs in the blood of almost every single citizen – including her own. She has received a Harvard's Planetary Health Alliance award for her socially engaged storytelling. She is a skilled drone pilot, aerial photographer, photographic printer and her photographic knowledge ranges from Large Format Film photography to advanced Photoshop skills.

This photograph captures the intense beauty and the environmentally devastating impact of mining in Brazil. The human and environmental impact of open pit mines and mining in Brazil are often obscured by the region’s mountainous terrain, relatively inaccessible to the local population. Working in collaboration with a pilot, Pontés has been photographing from above, sometimes flying in forbidden air space to capture these stunning images of the mining industry and increasing awareness.
