About the Item
Spanish visual artist Paula Anta (born 1977, Madrid, Spain) is known for her conceptual photography projects that explore the relationship between nature, culture, and territory. Her works often investigate how human intervention and natural forces shape the visual and symbolic landscape.
Caax (2018) belongs to the acclaimed Khamekaye series, created along the Grande-Côte of Senegal, a coastal strip stretching 150 km from Dakar to the mouth of the Senegal River. In this vast expanse of beaches and dunes, Anta photographed curious vertical structures made from branches, fishing nets, plastics, and found materials.
At first glance, these forms appear chaotic, but upon closer observation, they reveal a striking order and vitality—evoking totemic figures, creatures, and organic architectures shaped by wind, sea, and salt. In Wolof, Khamekaye means “landmark,” referring to these structures that mark the position of villages inland. Through this project, Anta transforms these utilitarian beacons into poetic reflections on identity, community, and the dialogue between nature and human creation.
Her work has been exhibited internationally in museums and institutions, and her photographic series are part of numerous public and private collections across Europe and Africa.
