Not unlike many of Pia Clodi’s works, Fleur Du Mal is a celebration of the analog process. Taken on Polaroid, the somewhat sepia toned finish of this work, along with the sharpness of the flowers form, which is a direct contrast to the more blurred finishes prevalent in her work, gives this photographic an air of glamour - as if it were a moment on the big screen in the roaring early years of Hollywood. There is drama in this image, particularly in the interaction between new life and old, both reaching for the light, represented by the budding flowers and those already in bloom.
Throughout Pia Clodi’s practice, her poetic approach to framing images allows a magnificent degree of interpretation, and allows a moment of contemplation and rest for its viewer.
Pia Clodi’s works encompass moments and mementos from her countless walks through cities as well as nature scapes. These chances, between or during photographic assignments, to illuminate an object, a person or an instance, were quietly collected by Pia Clodi, on her SX70 Polaroid camera. An incredibly poetic practice, of passively capturing calmness and sensuality within otherwise lacklustre material and forms, enables Clodi to inject beauty in the everyday, and invoke nostalgia for quieter and slower experiences.
Inspired by processes of creation, and early practices within photography, from the likes of Anna Atkins, Eugene Atget, William Fox Talbot and Louis Daguerre. Clodi’s work focuses on form and traces of life, over realism - whilst capturing stillness even through movement.
