S 02-22 is a limited-edition photograph by Italian contemporary artist Riccardo Varini.
The 30 x 45 cm (11.8 x 17.7 in) format is printed with white margins of approximately 3 cm (1.2 in) 1.5 cm on each side (0.6 in). Paper dimensions: 32.9 x 48.3 cm (12.9 x 19 in) for the 30 x 45 cm (11.8 x 17.7 in) format. All prints are Inkjet print on cotton paper 260 gr, signed and numbered.
In this series, the winter scenery of the Po Valley is presented with a sense of calm and stillness, often blanketed in snow and occasionally cloaked in fog. Bare trees and the faint outlines of distant animals emerge against the hushed, white landscape, forming delicate, graphic compositions. In some images, a turquoise-colored surface appears in the foreground, reminiscent of water; in truth, it is the windshield of the photographer’s car. As in much of Riccardo Varini’s work, the idea of the ‘threshold’ is central—a vantage point that opens a space for looking beyond, for embracing silence, and for cultivating a reverent connection with the landscape.
Riccardo Varini’s photography unfolds slowly, shaped by quiet intervals, emptiness, and silence. His landscapes, imbued with a subtle lyricism, transform into internal vistas that evoke not specific memories, but shared emotional resonances. The viewer is gently invited into a space of reflection, contemplation, and reverie. The subjects seem to transcend time and place, suspended in a state of timelessness. Varini’s photograph titles offer no indication of location or date, encouraging the imagination and emotional response of the observer to become part of the image’s atmosphere.
To create his restrained visual language, the artist uses overexposure, producing luminous, minimalist tones in which only what is essential remains visible. The pared-down aesthetic—clean lines, muted shapes, and subtle colors—is paired with meticulously composed framing, the result of patient, thoughtful study. Each print is personally produced by the artist on textured cotton paper, lending the photographs a soft matte surface, visually akin to watercolor.
Riccardo Varini describes his artistic process as follows: “My photography isn’t “shouted”. It’s made up of pauses, religious silences, long, drawn-out periods and blurred lights. It’s a slow photograph that invites you to contemplate… And if “il naufragar m’è dolce in questo mare”, it wants to tend towards eternity, rather than memory”.

Riccardo Varini's photographs, imbued with a delicate poetry, are distinguished by their essential language. His landscapes are inner landscapes that invite contemplation. The artist uses overexposure when shooting to achieve a sober language of clear, luminous tones. However, the simplicity of lines, and shapes is combined with careful, long-studied composition. The photographs are printed on textured cotton paper, which gives the image a velvety matte effect. Riccardo Varini’s career is punctuated by awards and appearances at renowned events. In 2009, he took part in the Fotografia Europea international festival in Reggio Emilia and a few years later, in 2012, one of his photographs was chosen by the Le Monde to represent the MIA (Milan Image Art Fair). “My photography isn’t “shouted”.
