Hicks depicts the normality of urban living in this photograph of a block of flat in Brixton. Brixton is situated in South London, in the borough of Lambeth. At its height, Lambeth was famous for glassmaking and boat building.
When the Westminster Bridge was opened in 1750, it marked a new start for the inhabitants of Lambeth. Along with the subsequent construction of the Blackfriars and Vauxhall bridges throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, it was now possible for people to move more freely within the city of London.
Despite the developments in the city, Lambeth remains to this day a poorer borough compared to its many siblings across the city of London. In this depiction of a mundane block of flats in Brixton, Hicks reveals the everyday, the mundane, the average. This contrasts with the glossy appearance of high art photography, but it permits Hicks to return to his roots which are, indeed, normal.
Here, Hicks presents Brixton as he sees it - as the inhabitants of Brixton see it. And yet it also permits the viewer to see a side of London that they may not have witnessed before.

Samuel Hicks
English photographer Samuel Hicks combines a commercial and editorial approach to constructing images. During Hicks’ foundation course at university, he was intrigued by the photography department and subsequently decided to apply for a BA in Photography. During his BA degree, Hicks got work experience with commercial photographers in London, and his eyes were opened to the world of commercial photography. He was so enthralled that he left the BA one year early, and found work as a photography assistant, working mainly with “people and cars”. These years were spent, among other things, travelling around the world and shooting personal work, which led to him joining an agency. Now an independent creative photographer, Hicks shoots commercial and personal projects. Hicks’ creative process always starts with inspiration, from musicians and designers, to other photographers. His aim is always to find great beauty where other people don’t.
