The vast Los Angeles landscape stretches out into the horizon in this photograph by Samuel Hicks. The streetlights lining the boulevards illuminate their surroundings in a gentle orange glow that adds an element of warmth and generosity to this otherwise notoriously competitive environment.
Taking the photograph at twilight allows Hicks to work with both natural and man made lights in the form of the sunset and the streetlights. In this way Hicks maximises the light available to him, and uses what appears organically in the Los Angeles cityscape.
The orange glow of the neon streetlights creates a dynamic contrast with the darkened city streets, rendering them navy blue in tone. Having composed his photograph around this highway or autoroute that runs directly through this section of Los Angeles, Hicks draws the eye of the viewer directly through his composition in a manner that is natural and fluid.

Samuel Hicks
English photographer Samuel Hicks combines a commercial and editorial approach to constructing images. During Hicks’ foundation course at university, he was intrigued by the photography department and subsequently decided to apply for a BA in Photography. During his BA degree, Hicks got work experience with commercial photographers in London, and his eyes were opened to the world of commercial photography. He was so enthralled that he left the BA one year early, and found work as a photography assistant, working mainly with “people and cars”. These years were spent, among other things, travelling around the world and shooting personal work, which led to him joining an agency. Now an independent creative photographer, Hicks shoots commercial and personal projects. Hicks’ creative process always starts with inspiration, from musicians and designers, to other photographers. His aim is always to find great beauty where other people don’t.
