The roadside motel, Bruno's Motel, takes center stage in this unusual portrait by Samuel Hicks. Utilising a close-up of the gravelly highway as a complementary textural element, Hicks places specific focus on the typical American yellow tramlines of the highway.
The yellow tramlines dominate the foreground of the photograph in spite of being captured and rendered out of focus, as per the photographer's intention. This is all by design. The bright yellow lines lead the viewer's eye on a direct trajectory straight through the Nevada landscape which settles around the main details of the composition.
All around the main route Bruno's Motel, Texaco, and a speed limit sign present literal signposts in the otherwise spartan landscape of the Nevada desert. In the distance, the sky is blue and the highway stretches far into the distance, beckoning the viewer to jump into their own American adventure...

Samuel Hicks
English photographer Samuel Hicks combines a commercial and editorial approach to constructing images. During Hicks’ foundation course at university, he was intrigued by the photography department and subsequently decided to apply for a BA in Photography. During his BA degree, Hicks got work experience with commercial photographers in London, and his eyes were opened to the world of commercial photography. He was so enthralled that he left the BA one year early, and found work as a photography assistant, working mainly with “people and cars”. These years were spent, among other things, travelling around the world and shooting personal work, which led to him joining an agency. Now an independent creative photographer, Hicks shoots commercial and personal projects. Hicks’ creative process always starts with inspiration, from musicians and designers, to other photographers. His aim is always to find great beauty where other people don’t.
