About the Item

Oil on canvas 38,4 x 47,2 cm (55 x 65,4 cmwith frame) = 15.12 × 18.58 in (21.65 × 25.75 in with frame) The taste for Gothic, which originated in the English literary movement, spread to France in the first quarter of the 19th century. This taste manifested itself in a renewed interest in medieval architecture, which served as a backdrop for stories in literature and painting. In architecture, Viollet-le-Duc, under the leadership of Prosper Mérimée, carried out the first restorations of medieval buildings in France. Mérimée, an archaeologist, inspector general of historic monuments, historian himself, and mystic, embodied the tastes of the time. In painting, Fleury François Richard, François Granet, and Charles Marie Bouton, to name but a few, distinguished themselves through their depictions of Gothic buildings, particularly cloisters. Architecture became the setting for religious or historical scenes. The scene is not animated. Not a soul in sight, but a spirit inhabits it. The night is lit by a halo of moonlight, enlivened by a gushing fountain. Monastic life fades away; compline may not be singing of rest. Does the spirit of Ambrosio haunt the place? Beneath the slab, the corpse of Antonia? Our painting is very “captivating”... It could be the setting for a tragedy, the theater of a Mephistophelean struggle unfolding behind the scenes, behind the columns, at the back of a crypt. *The Monk, a novel by Matthew Gregory Lewis, published in 1796. The novel, which was highly controversial when it was released, was hugely successful despite its immoral nature. It had a major influence on many Romantic authors.

Boot was born in Manchester. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1874 to 1884, showing mainly English and Continental landscapes. Boot was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and of the Arts Club, who listed him as a "painter and writer on Gothic architecture". Boot also painted domestic genre and interior scenes but tended to concentrate on landscapes. Boot lived and married in London. He is buried with his wife in Hampstead. The subject of this painting, Kirkstall Abbey in Yorkshire, was a place Boot often visited.
