Signed in pencil on recto Manuel Alvarez Bravo was a pioneer of artistic Latin American Photography in the 20th Century and produced a proliferate body of images from the 1920’s to the 1990’s. His father and grandfather were both amateur photographers, thus introducing Alvarez Bravo to the medium at a young age. Throughout his career, Alvarez Bravo poetically captured images of rural and urban Mexico, translating reality into dream-like landscapes. In this black-and-white platinum print, a cropped image of a woman’s upper torso and exposed chest is captured. The woman wears a loose printed robe, which along with the decorative branches and forest setting, evokes a sense of primitivism.   He, along with Diego Rivera, Tina Modotti, Edward Weston, Frida Kahlo, and Octavio Paz, changed the way the world looked at Latin American Art and society.
