About the Item

BETTIE PAGE – THE TELEPHONE CALL, SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH FROM THE COLLECTION OF HUGH HEFNER ⚜ Black and White Photograph by Bunny Yeager ⚜ Hand Signed by Bettie Page in Black Marker ⚜ Provenance: Hugh Hefner Estate ICONIC PIN-UP WITH UNRIVALED PROVENANCE This striking photograph captures Bettie Page in one of her most playful nude poses — perched on a shag stool with a telephone in hand. The image was originally taken in 1954 by legendary photographer Bunny Yeager, whose work with Page reshaped the history of pin-up photography. This later reproduction print was personally signed by Bettie Page c.1993, during the brief period when she reemerged in collaboration with Yeager to release signed photographs of their classic 1954 sessions. What sets this piece apart is its extraordinary provenance: it comes directly from the private collection of Hugh Hefner, founder of Playboy. Hefner, who made Bettie Page’s Bunny Yeager Christmas photographs the centerpiece of his January 1955 Playmate feature, long regarded Page as one of the magazine’s most important early muses. Page personally gifted this signed photograph to Hefner, making it far rarer and more significant than typical Page autographs. WHY COLLECT THIS WORK? ✓ Hand-signed by Bettie Page, the “Queen of Pin-Ups,” making it far rarer than typical reproductions ✓ Photograph originally taken by Bunny Yeager, Page’s most celebrated collaborator, whose images defined 1950s pin-up culture ✓ From the personal collection of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, adding unmatched provenance and cultural importance ✓ Historical significance: Page appeared as Playboy’s Playmate of the Month in January 1955, just a year after Marilyn Monroe’s groundbreaking 1953 debut in the first issue ✓ An irreplaceable convergence of three cultural giants — Page, Yeager, and Hefner — whose work reshaped photography, publishing, and popular culture ARTWORK DETAILS: ▸ Title: [Bettie Page – The Telephone Call] ▸ Artist/Photographer: Bunny Yeager (1929-2014) ▸ Subject: Bettie Page (1923-2008) ▸ Medium: Black and White Photograph (reproduction print, signed) ▸ Creation Date: Original negative 1954; this signed print produced c.1993 ▸ Country of Creation: United States ▸ Signature: Hand signed by Bettie Page in black marker, lower right ▸ Dimensions: — ◼︎ Image Size: 12.5 x 10.5 inches — ◼︎ Paper Size: 11 x 14 inches — ◻︎ Frame Size: 15.5 x 13.5 x 0.75 inches ▸ Condition: Excellent condition; original frame also excellent ▸ Provenance: Collection of Hugh Hefner (1926-2017); acquired directly from his estate in 2018 INCLUDED DOCUMENTATION: ✓ Certificate of Authenticity ✓ Artist Biography Document ✓ Sale Documentation from the Estate EXPANDED CONTEXT PROVENANCE: BETTIE PAGE: The Queen of Pin-Ups Bettie Page’s trademark jet-black bangs, mischievous smile, and fearless posing made her the most iconic pin-up model of the 20th century. Her work bridged glamour, fetish photography, and mainstream beauty at a time when American culture was on the cusp of the sexual revolution. Despite her bold imagery, Page herself lived modestly, avoiding vices such as drinking or smoking. That contrast—wholesome in life, daring in art—helped cement her legend. BUNNY YEAGER: Model Turned Revolutionary Photographer Bunny Yeager (1929-2014) began her career as one of Miami’s most photographed models before turning to photography in 1954. With her modeling experience and her flair for designing her own swimsuits, she brought a female perspective to pin-up photography, making her subjects feel at ease. Her collaboration with Bettie Page in 1954 produced some of the most famous photographs of the 20th century, including the “Jungle Bettie” series and the Santa-hat Christmas image chosen by Playboy for its January 1955 issue. Yeager went on to photograph Ursula Andress in Dr. No and built an international career, but her images of Page remain her most enduring contribution to visual culture. HUGH HEFNER PLAYBOY: The Cultural Connection Playboy launched in December 1953 with Marilyn Monroe as its first centerfold. Just over a year later, Bettie Page was chosen as Miss January 1955, photographed by Bunny Yeager. While Hefner did not meet Bettie Page in person until 1993, her presence in those early issues helped cement Playboy’s reputation and gave the magazine its most memorable early imagery. This photograph’s provenance is especially significant: it came directly from Hugh Hefner’s personal collection. Unlike typical signed Page photographs, this example was gifted by Page to Hefner himself — making it a one-of-a-kind piece of cultural history. A CULTURAL TRINITY: Page, Yeager, and Hefner This work represents a unique convergence of three cultural figures who shaped postwar American attitudes toward sex and media: * Bettie Page (1923-2008): The most famous pin-up model of the 20th century, a symbol of sexual liberation and feminine allure. * Bunny Yeager (1929-2014): The pioneering female photographer who captured Page’s most iconic images and gave pin-up photography a new, artistic voice. * Hugh Hefner (1926-2017): Playboy’s founder, who used these images to launch a publishing empire and spark conversations about freedom and sexuality that still resonate today. Together, they created a visual and cultural legacy rivaled only by icons like Marilyn Monroe. With Page’s signature, Yeager’s original imagery, and Hefner’s personal ownership, this photograph is both a work of art and a piece of American history.
