About the Item
Hand-coloured tableau of a weeping spirit and her guardians, immobilised in marble. A disjointed narrative looking at recovery and protection, the angels shield the spirit with tender embraces and cry for her when alone.
Taken from The Sialia Marbles, a series of portraits containing ephemeral human sculptures taken between 2016-19. Together these works act as tales contained in a fictional sculpture hall, in direct reaction to Andre Malraux’s 1947 Le Musee Imaginaire (Museum Without Walls).
During the beginning of the 'Museum Age' in the 18th century , writer Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe discussed mythical sculpture as living in a world where they 'reign in splendid isolation' (On the Laocoon Group, 1798); a description which sings in melody with the dissociative nature of the artist's mind. In reaction, Eleanor casts stories in a form of fictional rigor mortis, through the symbolic reference to the weight and endurance of marble sculpture. Tableau's react only within themselves: anatomist studies corpse, a creature is hunted, angels embrace the sanctuary of one another. Within the anthology, Eleanor's own fragments of visual tales are complemented by visual references to characters (and their artists) who have become beautiful stains on her own visual tapestry.
"I’m not a sculptor, but I wanted to construct my own stories. Photographers have often used sculpture in order to challenge our idea of a “sculptural” body or object, by casting them in a two-dimensional light. I love playing with perception. A lot of my work is influenced by the nineteenth century—the pictorialist movement for instance. When photography was a new experiment, people would play around with perception tricks—Victorian paper theatres or even the Cottingley Fairies hoax. (...)

Katie Eleanor (b.1993) is a photographic artist living and working in London. She studied Photographic Arts at the University of Westminster, graduating in 2015. Her practice revolves around illustrating enigmatic narratives that bridge the gap between fantasy and reality. Once she has a concept for her stories, she paints the performers, designs and makes the costumes, and creates the sets to photograph them. Using analogue photography and contemporary printing techniques, the resulting black and white prints are then meticulously hand- coloured by the artist. Katie's work has received press by The Royal Photographic Society, and her fashion stories have been published by magazines such as Hunger and Notion. Her latest body of work, The Sialia Marbles, presented at MMX Gallery, was her second exhibition in the gallery and her first solo show. Her work has been recently sold to numerous private art and photography collections.

'Saint Wanderer’s Hospital' series depicts a fictional tale birthed from the artist’s inherent need to find splendour in the idea of sickness.
Rooted first from her own words, Katie used the idea of illustrating as a form of personal art therapy by immersing herself in the realm of the otherworldly characters. Every aspect of each scene was created by Katie alone, from building and designing the sets to printing and hand-colouring the final images. In this act, over the year long course of the projects creation, the artist managed to make certain turmoil in her personal life bearable.
In the world of the hospital, the artist adapts the role of medical photographer – creating accurate portraits of each character’s condition as a record for the hospitals future use.
