My name is Stefanie Schneider, and I work primarily with expired Polaroid film—a medium that perfectly mirrors how I perceive and express the world. My journey with Polaroid began during my studies, but it wasn’t until I moved to Los Angeles that I found my true connection to it. One day, I stumbled upon a large box of expired Polaroid film in a shop. The price was so low, I bought it all on impulse. Little did I know that this chance encounter would set the stage for my artistic identity.
When I first used the expired film, it was as though I had found a language for my emotions. The unpredictable colors, softened edges, and subtle distortions felt like a visual translation of memory itself. Expired Polaroid material is often described as unpredictable, but for me, it’s anything but. The date of expiration, storage conditions, and the film type give clues, and after a single shot, I can confidently predict how the rest will respond. This controlled unpredictability mirrors how moments in life shift and fade, becoming imperfect but deeply resonant memories.
My creative life spans two worlds: America and Europe. In Berlin, I oversee post-production and connect with collectors and galleries. Europe, with its rich artistic traditions, offers a perfect backdrop for presenting my work. Meanwhile, in the California desert, I create. The desert’s stark light, reflective soil, and raw intensity lend a vibrancy to my work that no other setting could provide. The interaction between Polaroid film and the desert light is almost alchemical, resulting in images that feel both fleeting and eternal.
Over the years, I’ve built a universe where others can lose themselves—a space crafted from dreams, fragments of memory, and traces of longing. It’s not just nostalgia I explore but the way memory reshapes reality, altering colors and details to create something both familiar and otherworldly.
After stepping away from LUMAS for seven years, I’ve realized that our collaboration was never truly over. Their scale and reach provide a platform to share my stories with a broader audience, allowing my work to transcend the traditional gallery space. LUMAS gives my art the power to connect with people who might not usually step into a gallery, making the act of dreaming and remembering more universal.
I want my art to invite people on a journey—not just through my memories but through their own. Polaroids are a shared experience; watching an image develop in real time is a moment of connection, something Instagram’s instant gratification can never replicate. My goal is simple: to build bridges between the personal and the collective, reminding us all of the beauty in imperfection, the magic in the fleeting, and the power of the stories we carry.
