I came across the intense stare of this Pokot lady at a Friday market on a mountain summit in northern Kenya; it was the same market where I photographed a Samburu goat herder wrapped in blankets. The Pokot and Samburu are engaged in a constant battle over grazing rights, the two groups tend not to mix even at the market. This lady and the women with her were watched carefully by armed Pokot warriors as they walked amongst the market’s wooden stalls.
The journey to the market involves walking many kilometres across the valley floor and then a 1000m ascent to the mountain pass. When she left the market she carried no purchases with her an example of the exertions and huge distances that people in the north endure in order to trade and buy their basic necessities.

Lotte Jacobi (August 17, 1896 – May 6, 1990) was a leading American portrait photographer and photojournalist, known for her high-contrast black-and-white portrait photography, characterized by intimate, sometimes dramatic, sometimes idiosyncratic and often definitive humanist depictions of both ordinary people in the United States and Europe and some of the most important artists, thinkers and activists of the 20th century.
Jacobi's photographic style stressed informality, and sought to delve deeper into the traits of her subjects than traditional portraiture. She made a point of photographing subjects in their own environments, and talking to them while she worked. She explained the reasoning behind her approach this way:
"I just try and get people to talk, to relax, to be themselves. I don't like a passive, bored subject. I do portraits because I like people, and I want to bring out their personalities. Many photographers today, I think, are bringing out the worst part of people. I try and bring out the best."
Jacobi is perhaps best known for her "portrait of Albert Einstein (Princeton, 1938), whom she photographed candidly, seated at his desk, dishevelled and dressed in a leather jacket, a work that was refused by Life magazine for its simplicity." Other personality-driven portraits include "Eleanor Roosevelt sitting back, gesturing, and obviously speaking in midsentence; Marc Chagall depicted as a jovial family man; Thomas Mann appearing as thoughtful as his work; and more candid, gentle portraits of Einstein." Other celebrated subjects included poets W. H. Auden, Robert Frost, and May Sarton; philosopher Martin Buber; writer J.D. Salinger; writer and activist W. E. B. I met this stunning Rendille moran (warrior) in the shade of trees near the base of Mount Nyiru. Spring waters, flowing from the huge mountain plateau above, ensure year-round greenery in this area of great aridity.
The morans of both the Rendille and the Samburu wear beautifully ornate necklaces. Each design is specific to warriors within a clan and to a time in history (the ‘age-set’ that a young man enters after circumcision). Growing up in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Earlie Hudnall, Jr. learned the importance of community and culture and photography. His father was an amateur photographer, and his grandmother kept the family albums filled with valuable snapshots.
After returning from his tour-of-duty in Vietnam, Earlie Hudnall moved to Houston to study at Texas Southern University. There, he continued his interest in photography. While studying art, he met one of his most significant mentors, John Biggers, the painter and muralist that depicted African American life in the South. He had impressed Earlie to make art that was drawn from his own experiences. His images capture communities much like the one in his home- town of Hattiesburg. Earlie’s strongest work was made in Houston.
Earlie Hudnall’s images have been widely published.
