About the Item

Widow in Her Bedroom, 55th St, NYC, 1963 by Diane Arbus is a vintage gelatin silver print. The subject, dressed in a shiny dress, is seated in a cluttered room between a large vase and a writing desk covered with statuettes and idols. The portrait was made and printed by Arbus in the 1960s from a period of groundbreaking portraiture by the artist, during the 1950s-1960s. Diane Arbus printed The Widow a bit dark most likely because of the image’s strong emotional resonance with the photographer. The image size (8.5 x 8.5in) lends to the intimacy of the print of her subject, a widow in her bedroom with objects around her that shine. The subject’s dress pops while her face remains somber. Although Diane Arbus was not known for being the greatest printer technically the photographer’s interpretation of the imagé remains emotional, visceral, and authentic. Image size 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" on 14" x 11" paper. The photo back (verso) is stamped 'A Diane Arbus print,' printed by Diane Arbus, signed, dated by Doon Arbus, Executor, in ink, copyright credit with reproduction limitation stamps. Archive numbers also noted on verso. The print is in excellent condition with stamp Robert Miller Gallery on back of the original mat. *** Artist's Bio: American photographer Diane Arbus (1923-1971) is famous for her portraits of individuals on the margins of society. The photographer's work captures the bizarre and disturbing while the legendary artist in 20th century photography managed to remain compassionate and complicit with her subjects, resulting in raw psychological intensity that characterizes the work.
