Francesco Scavullo
Francesco Scavullo (1921–2004) was an American fashion photographer celebrated for his glamorous, highly polished style that helped define the look of late-20th-century popular culture. Born in Staten Island, New York, Scavullo began experimenting with photography in his teens, often using his sisters as models. After assisting Horst P. Horst at Vogue, he established his own career and quickly became one of the most in-demand photographers of his generation. Scavullo is best known for his decades-long collaboration with Cosmopolitan, where his bold, sensual, and confident images of women graced more than three decades of covers, beginning in the 1960s. His portraits extended well beyond fashion: he photographed countless celebrities, from Hollywood stars to musicians and cultural icons, including Barbra Streisand, Madonna, Grace Kelly, and Andy Warhol. His approach balanced glamour with intimacy, making his subjects appear both larger-than-life and approachable. Over the years, Scavullo published several books, including Scavullo on Beauty (1972), Scavullo Women (1982), and Scavullo: Photographs 1948–1984, which solidified his place in both the fashion and fine art worlds. His work has been exhibited internationally and is part of major collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. For collectors, Scavullo’s posters, exhibition prints, and signed ephemera hold strong value. They not only capture the aesthetics of an era but also represent the enduring appeal of an artist whose images helped shape the public’s perception of beauty, celebrity, and style in the latter half of the 20th century.

This 2013 fine art print caricature, is legend opera star Luciano Pavarotti (1935-2007), the most commercially successful tenor of all time, holding the honorific title "King of the High Cs". This caricature was created by artist Dan Springer and shows the maestro singing, mouth wide open, hitting the highest notes in Opera on a Red-Maroon. It was mastered from the original drawing in high resolution digital format and reproduced in a numbered-edition series, on fine art archival pigment paper. Dan’s focus is to elevate the personalities of iconic celebrities by using exaggerations of some of their physical characteristics and also an oversimplification of others.
Dan Springer states:
“There’s the character and then the caricature. If it’s a celebrity, there’s always a persona that’s a caricature outside of who the celebrity is but in different layers. My goal is to bring out those layers of the character, in a caricature format that is defined by their facial image and their eccentricities.”
Dan Springer received his formal art training at the Rhode Island School of Design where he received his BFA in Illustration in 1991. Since then, he has done freelance illustration for various publications including "The New York Times", "The Village Voice", and "Avenue" magazine. He started his fine art career in 1996 when he founded the "4E Gallery" in Tribeca where he and his partner showed various artists, as well as their own work every month. He also showed at numerous galleries and clubs, including the "Ace Gallery", the "Gershwin Gallery", "The Tunnel" and "Faces and Names", (161 W. 54th St.), and "Rumours" (8th Ave. & 55th St.) where he has a permanent exhibition. Jack Mitchell, (1925-2013) bulging photographic portfolio of actors, writers, painters, musicians and especially dancers describes a pictorial history of the arts in the late 20th century. Mr. Mitchell, who took hundreds of pictures for The New York Times, was both a portraitist and a capturer of complex motion. An expert in lighting, he worked mostly, though not entirely, in black and white, and he was known — by his subjects, by the magazine and newspaper editors he worked for, and by critics — as someone who could make a photograph reveal character.
Jack Mitchell was the official photographer for the American Ballet Theater, and he chronicled the work of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for more than thirty years. When he retired in 1995, he had fulfilled more than 5,000 assignments in black and white, and nearly a thousand in color. He photographed more than 160 covers for Dance magazine, and his photos have appeared in Time, Life, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Vogue and many other publications.
